One for the accountants probably:

If someone is a registered ST & fills in the appropriate tax return sections but doesn't actually trade during a tax year, are they still entitled to pay voluntary Class 2 NI contributions to fill up thier NI record or do they have to pay Class 3? There would be no other income or employment during the year.

Class 2 is not voluntary. Class 2 is payable based on minimal income.

There IS a voluntary type of NI which is Class 3. You can pay that.
