Hi all, my Dad is looking for a new motorway cruiser for work and has been wondering what car would be best for approx 20kmiles p/a, with a budget of 5k?

Unfortunately, a deer hit is C180 which has caused it to be a write-off whilst going to work.

Hi! There are hundreds of fairly sound options at that price point, one of the advantages of big saloons depreciating so heavily!

I had the same question and same budget, I wanted something with a sense of luxury/refinement and something reasonably swift so narrowed it down to Jaguar XF, Audy A6, and Merc CLS, tried all three and the Merc won hands down. I paid £5,500 and got a mint 320 (literally mint!), 2007 with full history, 32k on the clock, and just had a major service. It still turns heads (they were the first of the coupe style saloons), is plenty quick enough, super-refined and comfortable on a cruise, and I get 40mpg on a run.

I suspect it will come down to personal preference though, there's so much good stuff at that price point.

Thanks for that, think he's now come to the decision for a CLS but going for a 2016+..... think his budget has gone out the window and wants to treat himself ones this all passes....

In that case maybe take a lok at the Jag XJ (newer shape, gorgeous car and superb interior with loads of kit; I think the XJ and CLS will feel that bit more special than some of the other options.

Sorry, my point wasn't that he shouldn't be driving. (As always, thanks to the key workers thumbup), it was that the deer hit him rather than him hitting the deer!

hehe

Another vote for a Volvo here. S60 for £5k would be a good start.

Thank you all for the thoughts, the original 5k budget has gone out the window.

He was tempted by the CLS but has gone with a Jag XE, something different from his history of BMW's and Mercs. Are their any known issues on 2017-2019 models?

Can't believe how much Merc CLS you can get for 5k.

What's the catch? I had an e350 CDI for a year or so and it was a nice car, are the CLS with the previous gen engine pretty reliable?
