Sky Q question regarding recordings / planner.

I currently have two HD boxes. Family lounge and dedicated cinema room.
There are obviously individual planners for recorded programs on each box, which is ideal.
If I upgrade to a Q system, can this situation be maintained in any way?
I’d like a cinema too planner, not contaminated with hundreds of family ‘entertainment’ recordings. as I fear my choices will be lost in a mire of sh*te!
(I’ll take the opportunity to add a bedroom mini-box too for occasional use)
I’ve had no luck asking Sky on a few occasions over the last 18momths.
I get a different confused answer each time.
I’m currently paying £45 for box sets package and an additional £14 multi-room.
How does this compare with the same in Q land?

So, there are advantages and disadvantages to having Q.
Advantages.
1080P and 4K/UHD available from main Q Box
1080P available from Q Mini Box
Centralised Recording, regardless of where you started the recording or watching, the playback can be to any box on the system.
The amount of catch-up, streaming apps and services available from the boxes.
Disadvantages.
Loss of all current recordings on HD boxes.
Centralised Recording, having to search through all recordings to find yours.
IR Control Box & Local TV can be difficult to configure in some setups.
Same PIN for restricted access across all boxes.
WiFi connections can be iffy, would prefer to wire if at all possible.
As for costs, from memory Q is / was a little bit cheaper when we switched.

The installer will change over the LNB, and if its an old dish (like ours was), you'll get a new one.
Biggest issue (as mentioned here) is the WiFi connection between Q and mini boxes can be hard to get right. In fact, my installer couldn't get it working in my '30's bungalow at all, so I just told him I'd do it with ethernet. Luckily this works perfectly and has been extremely reliable.
If you've got a large or old house with thick walls it could be difficult.

It’s a shame for me then

I need it to have separate users, similar to Netflix I guess, where ‘My List’ is actually mine, not filled with other family members dross!
I so want to get this updated, but HD works fine for me now and these downsides are as I suspected, so I’ll leave it for now.
I do want that 4K goodness though......
With sky Q if you go to your recordings and press sort by, you can scroll down to cinema for your films. Also the remote has voice control so you can ask it to search for something (its quite clever).
Common issue is sound drop out on recordings, dowloaded content and from the apps. Sometimes it happens sometimes not and its only brief but very noticeable. I'm getting very frustrated with it.

I havent had any drop out issues and my Q runs both a standard screen and a 5.2.2 cinema package with Yamaha amp. Common issue is sound drop out on recordings, dowloaded content and from the apps. Sometimes it happens sometimes not and its only brief but very noticeable. I'm getting very frustrated with it.

You may also have a problem with Sky+ vs Sky Q as the LNB's are not the same and will need an engineer to change them over on the dish.
Just to help here, BigAl is correct in saying LNB (Bit on the dish arm) should be changed, but depending on what you have up there you now dont need to. There are a few bits of electronics that will convert either a Quad (4 outputs for 4 receivers) or a Quattro (Larger Apartment type systems) into a Sky Q compatible signal.
I've installed a few into my projects and they work very well. Perfect for those with restricted access to the dish.

Thanks everyone. I’m actually pretty AV savvy, just no experience of the Q interface

How are you connecting yours up.
Have you called Sky to troubleshoot?
I connect mine to my yamaha amp, then the amp goes to the tv. Its apparently quite common according to online forums.

RED 5, have you got Virgin media along your road? That may be an alternative for you.
Same as Sky HD, each box has their own recordings, is hard-wired to Co-ax (so no pesky wifi or networking to worry about), and you'll also get UHD with each V6 box also.
Downsides are that the Tivo interface is clunky and dated and it's harder to find content than Sky.
Also, as you're out of your Sky contract (presumably), you stand to get a great deal.

I know what you mean about the interface though! When the hell are they going to do something about that

Yep i did that. Literally took the HDMI out of the apple tv and put it in the back of the sky box. Same outcome.I’ve had a similar issue a few times, where this has worked.

Ok, what resolution are you running on each device? Common test for drop outs is to lower the resolution on the source device and see what happens.
Just trying to help out, sorry if I am teaching an egg sucking routine.

I had an instance, where a particular Humax box, would only work on HDMI 6.
Now this was on a Denon amp, but both products were brand new and had no issues.
Best try all the HDMI inputs, after configuring them for the same resolution etc.
Also, does your amp have a second HDMI output that mirrors the main?
If so, also try that?
....perhaps also configure and connect an optical, or coax cable, to see if it’s a Sky box HDMI issue, or perhaps something internal processing audio.
