Not that unusal an event - although rarely caught on camera.

My uncle used to regale me with tales of Aer Lingus BAC 1-11s descending though thunderstorms over the Pyrenees on approach to Lourdes Airport with lightning hopping off the nose radome. He was an engineer with Aer Lingus and they used to allow him have the jump seat on the flight deck. The pilgrims in the passenger cabin used to be working their rosary beads overtime.

Witnessed an identical incidence many years ago while on my way to the pub one summer evening. An airliner heading into manchester during a dry thunderstorm.

It does happen a lot to aircraft, and they cope very well with only 1/10 causing any damage.

This happens to be a nasty strike though.

Doh ! didn't realise it was a gif so just saw a pic of an aircraft and some robotic UFOs . Turned off my firewall and all became clear.
