Would like WiFi on my deck. There is power, that goes:

House consumer unit -> deck consumer unit -> sockets via MCB

Will powerline work like this or does it have to be the same ring?

Doesn’t need to be same ring. Can buy from Argos and return if it doesn’t work.
Wi-Fi mesh systems are pretty decent, could be another option?

Works brilliantly, getting approx 150mbps across the powerline and steady 20ish mbps broadband out at the other end of the garden.

I suppose I'm just getting old and come from an era of fax machines, but I still find this sort of thing kind of magical really hehe

We used powerline adapters for the TV for several years but when the compressor on the fridge started we would lose the stream!

It will definitely go across rings etc

It's definitely witchcraft.
Bloody clever solution to the problem.

I was always sceptical about Power Line Adaptors, particularly their ability to get through consumer units, but have just invested in some Devolo dLan 500 and 1200+ adaptors to get to a barn about 50 metres away from the router going via at least three consumer units. While the resultant data rate is only about 25Mbps for the furthest PLA, it's perfectly adequate for a pair of CCTV cameras and surfing.

I remember trying to run audio over ring main when I was a teenager. That didn’t go so well.

Hope they last better than mine. I had two sets of these one after the other. First set failed after 9 months and the second after about 11. Rock solid and fast until one day they lose sync and nothing will get it back. Second time was after a momentary power cut so maybe they don't have much spike protection, don't recall anything coinciding with the first failure.

Amazon replaced the first time and refunded the second with pretty much no questions.

Have now moved to mesh since it was added to my router's firmware in an update.

As said will work across rings. I set up a devolo magic powerline this week. The node in the garage 30m from the house is showing a healthy speed, not as quick as in the house on the main circuit but decently strong. I did try a tenda mesh but found we didnt really have plugs in convenient places (with somewhere to stand the node) so the pass through facility of the devolo is much easier to acvomodate
