Trim levels - worth it?

Are higher trim levels like S-Line/M-Sport when combined with the cheapest engine worth it? Or would the money be better spent on an entry lower trim level like Technick/SE/Sport in order to get the higher powered engine? E.g. Audi A4 40 TFSI Sport vs Audi A4 35 TFSI Black Edition - barely any difference in list price.

Entirely down to personal preference surely. Only you can judge if something is worth it.

ETA - tbf the difference between those engines is more like a 3.5 inch or 4 incher I suppose

Haha very good analogy. I went for 35 TFSI S tronic Black Edition. Dropping down to S-Line and removing the paint meant I could have got the 40 TFSI S Tronic for about £300 less! But I went for feels over reals.

I went for the base "Sport" trim on my Audi as it had all (in fact more) that I needed and wanted. It also gave me smaller wheels with higher profile tyres which was far preferable to me.

One thing that befuddles me is the abundance of tech and connectivity that folks think they want or must have.
It's a dangerous distraction as far as I'm concerned. With the exception of decent nav.

Sadly most buyers/drivers have forgotten about driving hence the abysmal standards on UK roads.

Quite right - all these people distracted with pressing buttons for iPods and Spotify, and addresses for sat navs. It's simple enough to reach over to the glove box and swap one CD of Jeremy Clarkson Approved Official Top Gear Driving Songs for another. The ability to read a map balanced on the steering wheel while negotiating an unfamiliar town centre is a skill lost on the millennial generation who seem reliant on these newfangled gadgets. Pah!

I wanted a 6 pot BMW rather than 4 but the M sport cars were a lot more money so I bought the SE. No regrets at all. I think it looks more subtle and rides a lot better.

Also not a fan of tech in cars, mainly because it goes out of date quickly and also because many of these systems and touchscreens are not that user friendly. I think the E92 dash looks a lot nicer without idrive. For music and Nav I just use a simple cradle for my phone which is always up to date. But most of the time I don't need to use it when driving anyway.

I'd always want the best spec I could get but not at the expense of outright go so maybe I'd look at a different manufacturer so I could have my cake & eat it.

That's just me but I'm not loyal to any brand.

I almost bought an A4 recently and would have gone with the S Line over the Sport because I think the car looks a fair bit better with the S Line additions. Obviously not quite the same on the S Line Vs Black Edition but zee German brands are very clever at leaving some things they know most people will want off the lesser models. Can't fault them for it really as they are exceptionally good at making money.

I just ordered an A4. I would have happily had the base model (Technik) but I had to have tinted rear windows which meant I had to get at least S Line. Ended up getting Black Edition.

You're probably over 40. Decent bluetooth connectivity for music and hands free calls is a game changer, so are driver aids such as adaptive cruise control, BLIS, cameras etc. It's almost always a phone in the hands of a distracted driver, not the radio or navigation.

No I mean I had to get the S line/black edition as Technik/Sport did not come with rear privacy glass (which shields my kids from the sun when trying to get them to sleep).

Trim materials, colours, aircon vs climate etc make little difference to me as long as the deal is right.

Everyone's buying preferences are different but from a personal point-of-view, my must have bits of spec are xenon/LED headlamps, heated seats, auto dimming interior mirror, cruise and leather.

If I found 2 cars with the above spec and the same drivetrain, one SE, one S-line I'd always choose the SE for the superior ride quality.

I was thinking pre-facelift when the base model looked pretty peasant spec but they've improved it somewhat after the update. That being said, they still got you

Back in February we rented a Audi Q2 to go skiing from Geneva. It was stock white, no options, tiniest 17” wheels.

It was rapid! It turned out to be a 40TFSI Quattro S Tronic. 200+BHP. Much better than a 30TFSI S Line
