Covid 19 How can you infect less than one person?
Discussion
The R factor Surely you infect either 1 or zero
It is the same as being a little bit pregnant isn't it?
and while we are it, the latest lot of boat people are escaping the camps because ( according to the daily wail) an outbreak of the disease.
Are these being
1) put into strict quarantine
2) being sent back before their feet hit the UK
3) told to report to the local immigration office on Monday and sent on their way?
And why set a date three weeks in advance for all bona fide travellers entering the country? what is wrong with tomorrow?
Or am i really missing the point?
You can't. You can infect a whole number of people, zero or more. When they speak about fractions they are talking about averages. If half of people infected infect one other person each then on average people who are infected infect half a person each. In other words, infecting less than one person each on average means that some infected people are not passing on the disease to others.

One person can't infect half a person.
Ten people can on average infect five people.
Basically...above 1 and it spreads, below 1 and it's being contained.
Covid is now estimated to be in the 4-5 range.

We have been told that the wearing of a mask does not protect the wearer, but it does protect others from the wearer.
Surely on that basis, it would mean that if everyone was to wear a mask in public places, where the 2 metre distancing is problematic, wearing a mask would still be of benefit in reducing the spread of the disease?
Was the story that masks did not make much difference only put about to stop people trying to get hold of face masks, and thereby diverting supplies away from front line health workers?
I saw a woman on yootube making a mask out of an old pair of socks, So I tried it, and nearly killed me! I think I should have washed them first!

Don't think I've seen a more fitting example of the saying "better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and confirm it."
i would prefer to use the saying "there is no such thing as a stupid question". i4got said:
