Been having a clearcut and have amassed several boxes of paperwork that needs disposed of. My little domestic shredder can keep up with day-to-day stuff but won't take more than a handful of sheets at a time and is slow at that. I could envisage dealing with this lot using that may take a few days!

Anyone got a recommendation for a quick., robust shredder that can handle a decent volume? Not too bothered about it being crosscut into the tiniest bits, speed and volume is more relevant here.

If you want to do a lot, quickly, and don't want to pay hundreds/thousands for an office/commercial grade one, then have you thought about hiring one (@ about £50 for 1 day, and reducing for each subsequent day)?

Not a recommendation, but here's one from google...
http://www.officeneeds247.co.uk/shredderhire.html

If you needs something you can keep, and plod through your papers, then we bought a Swordfish 800CCX over 5 years ago (£140 back then), and it's still going strong with just the occasional oiling. I'd recommend cross-cut too - otherwise you'll find the bin filling up after about 50 sheets of A4.

Originally bought Fellowes/Rexel ones but they'd die/overheat if you tried to put more than about a 100 through them in one session.

Don't forget that most councils don't want shredded paper in your recycling bin as the small strips/confetti messes with their recycling machines.

I was in the same position.. I bought a Fellowes Powershred 99Ci which has been excellent and handles a decent amount of paperwork & is also cross cut. It also handles credit cards / paperclips / cds etc

I now use it for anything with my personal details on so it was a good investment

edit to say - paid £199 for it

I did it years ago - scanned everything I wanted & got rid of years of paperwork. Given it's a one time event it may not be worth splashing out on a super capacity shredder, but that's option one. As above, a bonfire is a good option. The final one is just take your time with the old shredded - stop every 1/2 hour or so when it overheats, then do some more later.

I had a garden fire pit thing, so burnt most & shredded the rest.

Thats a great price. Did you get it recently and could I ask from where?

I've just checked the receipt and it was a couple of years ago (thought it was more recent TBH!) & it was from Ryman. The receipt shows a 20% discount on a subtotal of £249.99 but i'm not sure what the 20% was for. (I don't have any accounts with them or other reasons for it)

I think I'll go with a home shredding service. For about £100 I can get the whole lot done. Will save me a load of time, and I don't foresee needing to shred this much in one go for quite some time so can let my little domestic one just keep up with the day to day.

I tried that the last time I did a clear out.. SO much smoke. Not sure the neighbours would be keen.

Got any kids you can pay to spend a couple of days feeding your existing shredder?

runtime on a domestic shredder is the problem. More than half an hour or so and it overheats. I've burnt one out in the past trying that :/

Oh I agree, mine had the same problem when I did the same as you last year. Maybe give it to them as a priced job? "£75 to shred this lot over the next week & if you burn out the shredder a new one comes out of the £75". After all, there's no rush is there.

yeah, but a domestic shredding service can take care of it quicker and for not much more.

I've got their 8-sheet version. Works well and has stood the test of time better than Fellowes and Argos shredders. Surprising how quickly you can fill the bin but at least it gives you a mandatory break to let it cool down for a bit.

I shredded paperwork going back to 1998 at the start of the lockdown. I shredded for 15 minutes until the shredder thermally cut out, let it cool whilst tidying the garage, and then started shredding again. Rinse and repeat for nearly a week. I was still going in to work 1 day a week and took a 85 litre rucksack full of paper to shred. Took 20 minutes compared to 2 days on a personal shredder!

I had a search locally for some mobile business confidential shredders - they didn't usually serve domestic customers, but I found a place that would swing round mine on their daily pickups and for £15 per full black bag they shredded everything in front of me.

I just try to make a point of switching everything to paperless and keeping on top of the recycling now.

It's the sodding till receipts which cause me grief. I build up mountains of them from the grocery shopping, the petrol station etc but they're all either too short or too flimsy to feed into the shredder as easily as a sheet of A4. I'd rather not go without a till receipt (see: Milkround) but that leaves me with a fiddly chore to then dispose of correctly.

I did buy a garden incinerator a while back which is a bit smoky and unfortunately burning stuff during lockdown has been highly frowned upon by The GesClapO....
