Hi new to this so unsure if it goes here
UK
Bought a car a few years ago and it has private numberplate on it. It looks like the number plate is worth like 1.5k and would like to sell it. I want to sell the car separately as well. I do not have the certificate for the private numberplate. Am I able to take it off and sell? How do I get hold of certificate if I can. Any help is appreciated?

Go on line to DVLA & first place your number on retention.

You will get a cert for the plate & a new V5 with an alternative reg no.

Take plate off, buy new physical plates for car. Put old physical plates in cupboard while you try and sell the plate smile

Hi I just checked the dvma website and it says after retention you will receive 'a V778 retention document if the private number is in your name'
It isn't on my name as I bought the car with the number plate. Will I still receive it?

Yes. Until the plate goes back on retention, it belongs to the vehicle, and keeper follows the V5c. Next time, read the website, don't skim it.

If the V5 for the car is in your name, the name on the V778 will be yours. (and the number is also on the V5)

The number plate can only be removed and allocated to the name on the registration document. It has to be registered in your name if you want to keep it. It can be transferred to somebody else's car later but this is the only way to retain it.

Resurrecting an old thread as this is the closest Google gave me to my question, and apologies for the laziness too as I'm sure I could find out from the DVLA but hoping the PH community can save me the pain of trying to reach them.

I bought a car with its initial DVLA issued registration. I then purchased a private plate and put that on the car (first time of private plate ownership hence not sure on the process).

I am thinking of selling the car and either want to keep the number plate or sell it separately unless I can get back what I paid for it in the sale.

Assuming I don't sell it with the car, does the initial registration get 'given back' to the car or is a new one issued?

Thanks

It will likely be reallocated the original registration number when you put your plate on retention. If you follow the retention process you will be told what to do, if you do it online you will instantly have confirmation of the ‘new’ plate to go onto the vehicle.
