Hi all,

I have 2 gym memberships at present. One is with a national chain at a discounted rate through work. This has been frozen throughout lockdown.

Another is with a local Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym. This is quite expensive and the gyms have been closed since the lockdown started. I asked about freezing membership but they suggested that I continue to 'support the club' in lockdown and offered an online zoom workout. With this martial art, you need to do it with someone ideally and I don't really have the option of doing it at home. I signed up originally to be taught and workout at the gym. I politely declined and was told that my membership is on hold for 1 month.

This gym has still taken payment, where do i stand on this?? given what i originally signed up for.

Full refund and cancel the standing order.

If it was a direct debit contract the bank and request the refund via the DD guarantee.

Sounds unreasonable to me.

The boxing gym I go to froze membership straight away and did a refund for part of the month when lockdown hit.

At a push I could understand a nominal fee for the zoom workout.

They're probably claiming furlough/gov support as well as full fees!

As above - seems a bit naughty

If I was a member of a small privately owned gym and they had asked from consideration I might consider it. As it is I am a member of a local authority run centre and all payments were suspended straight away when they had to close

Mine is one of the aforementioned small, independently owned businesses. They asked us as soon as they realised they'd have to close. I've continued paying and been doing online HIIT classes when I can be bothered. (I've realised I actually like being in a class with lots of other sweaty humans, oddly)
