Discussion
So thought id break out the discussion from the gamble thread if thats ok.
What pharma are we holding? mine ones havent been great but tils is rescuing me a bit today.
am holding
tils
syn
cir
dmtr
did have avacta and odx but sold this morning for a small loss as i panicked with the main news today.
dmtr has been a disaster so far yet people do seem to think it can leap. but then everyone does on the lse boards!
might go back in on avacta at some point. all a gamble but does give a thrill!
what ya holding

do you mean have they made a profit or have i sold for a profit? tils is up 40-50% in last 2 days. syn would have done but i bought back in too high. we wont talk about the rest....
I meant the companies.I checked them all (couldnt easily find data on syn though) and found they had all made losses for at least the last 5 years (i presume therefore, forever?)
I personally dont look at any companies that have never made profit.
1 year of loss with a reasonable excuse, yes, im fine with that, 2 years. maybe.
To me, pharma seems like a 100% gamble at the best of times. At the moment, with cv19, its even more of a gamble as every man and their dog is looking at the sector. Only a handful of companies are likely to find a useful cv19 drug, and what are the chances of it being the company you invest in?
Once the virus is over, the sector will return to normality and those 40-50% gains will reverse.
To me, investing doesnt need to be a gamble, when there are plenty of established, profitable companies that trade at a reasonble valuation.

yep never said it wasnt a gamble - hence the thrill - hence the thread breaking out from the gamble threadI checked them all (couldnt easily find data on syn though) and found they had all made losses for at least the last 5 years (i presume therefore, forever?)

Keep it simple. Legal and General Global Health and Pharmaceutical Index is a fund that's performed very well for me over many years,

All down today, but no news and wider market getting hammered. Maybe this is why gambling is not for me?!
Still, I'm hoping if 1 or 2 go well it will be fine and it's all in a sipp, so ive got 25 years to make up any losses
ha thoughts on odx? do wonder if they bring out the home test that will top trump the roche one or whether the gov will go with the "ibm" of manufacturers roche whatever4d

I dont know anything about it really but I understand odx test would be to do at home, which sounds far more preferable to something that needs to be sent to a lab.
Theres probably scope for a few tests though. Looks like we ate all going to be testing regularly to be able to go to work, school etc.

How many people made good money out of Amazon in the early years compared to all of those that lost a stack on other Dot Com companies? If you can predict what the next big thing will be with even a small ammount of certainty, then get in contact with any of the big investment banks and they will snap your arm off for a well paid job.

I dont see your point.Profit is just one metric, it may not matter in the short term, but in the long term, its all that matters for shareholder return.
Without it, a company cant build a healthy balance sheet, they cant pay out dividends and the business will need to dilute shareholders with addional shares just to survive.

Be interested to know thought process behind selling,I'm 200+150% up share fund n sipp,no intention of selling lol AIM I know till at least autumn or better still takeover
a panicking amateur! the process was I thought tils was going to fly as the news was awesome. i had no spare cash and i wanted to put more in. out of my stocks avacta had done nothing all week bar go down a little bit at the time and tbh i hadnt done that much research on it. there was lots of front page news that day about the gov using roche for tests so thought it wasnt going anywhere and it may plummet so I put a sell order on it a few pence under the current price. it went down at first so it sold. I bought more tils at a high price which then went down having sold avacta which went up. so a double whammy!
i learnt a good lesson that i since read of dumb money goes in in the morning smart money in the afternoon!
still think tils will go up a lot though and am up overall on it.
tbh dont know that much about avacta compared to my other stocks. theres a limit how many pharma bets i can place! my biggest bet is still syn
tell me more about avacta!
I am pretty new to shares my time on furlough has given me a chance to do some research on most of the companies which is keeping me busy. My pharma stocks are definitely doing better than my oil!
AVCT + 51%
ORPH + 43%
DDDD - 6%
ODX - 10%
HEMO - 20%
Think I am going to sell most of my HEMO on the next upward swing as I am finding it far too volatile and likewise on ODX. Although it is part of the government led consortium it doesn't seem to have much in the armoury apart from the COVID links.

'stock marke ttakes money from impatient....gives to patient'
If you buy in at right level, few falls, make no difference jumping around chasing rainbows, never catch them,
Avct got dual cancer/ covid developments, partnerships with big pharma BUT they own intellectual property, was an excellent webinar by CEO week gone Wednesday think it's on website, investor section, whether it's a covid bubble or not I believe this firm will be taken over due to the exposure it's having, just got to research, buy what you believe in,most stocks I'm in now, reckon the CEO/bod are excellent, not just 'lifestyle' make a decision, stick with it good luck in future

If I was going to sell out hemo, which I ain't,ggp could be a good move away from pharma, gold exploration firm with 'perfect storm' ' brewing ref reserves and potential buy out by mining giant,or bidding war as always dyorAVCT + 51%
