McLaren have confirmed Ricciardo.

Looking forward to seeing him alongside Norris.

Good news for Mclaren and does seem to indicate Sainz to Ferrari.
Didn't want to offer a critique of Ricciardo before all the moves done but he does seem to have been motivated by huge amounts of money and Renault played into this in a moment of weakness.
Guess it was a cheap way to tread water.
I doubt Vettel is going to take a massive downward step from Ferrari to Renault so it does look like Alonso will come
back on a relatively modest wage.
Even £10million is modest in this world and masses more than you could earn in any other race series.

Do McLaren now have the most annoying driver pairing in F1 history?

I’m pleased for Daniel. I hope this move works out for him and that the 2021 McLaren Mercedes proves to be a competitive package. His decision to leave Red Bull for Renault was a huge, if financially lucrative, mistake. His career can’t afford another.

Fundoreen - Renault will be gone. They won't need any drivers. Part of the reason why Riccardo has jumped ship.

I do not understand the reasoning people have about Daniel's move away from Red Bull being money motivated. It's as clear as Horner's receding hairline that Red Bull see Verstappen as their Number 1. When you're a driver as good as Ricciardo who wants to win a world title, are you going to stick around and fight against a driver that the management quite obviously favour?

When Daniel went to Ricciardo Renault were on an upward curve, and last season they fell flat. We don't know what promises are whispered to drivers, but you would've thought that a works manufacturer F1 team would've done more with the tools they have last season. They didn't, and it made Daniel look a bit foolish. Plus he is a relatively young guy still, and motorsport continues to be dangerous. So I wouldn't have blamed him for asking for a good whack of money. We're not here for a long time, so make hay while the sun shines etc.

If it was all about money, Ricciardo would be at Red Bull being a number 2. But I genuinely believe he wants the world title, he's more than capable of it if given the platform to do so. You would hope that within the next 2 years McLaren will have that platform, so this is a good move for him.

With car 2020 cars being carried over to 2021 hasn't Mclaren been forced to use the Renualt engine for an extra year though because the FIA weren't happy that McLaren would need to fundamentally change the engine packaging and thus some aero while other teams could not, or did mcLaren volunteer it, either way from I gather Mclaren have an extra year with a renault

Yep, he went from a top F1 driver to a midfield driver in my mind and, no doubt, others too. Hopefully McLaren are on an upward trajectory that Renault never managed.

If this doesn’t happen it will never be mentioned again. However if it does happen you will be telling us all that you told us so in every F1 thread for years to come.

That's how it works isn't it? Predict everything and you'll always be right. smile

Wrong as well, but no-one cares about that.

Didn't Hamilton and him talk and Hamilton said he should be getting the cash while he can? Red Bull weren't paying him much basing it almost all on performance pay, renault offered a fortune and he's getting to the end of his career?

I'd like to see a resurgence of McLaren

yep, sitting at red bull being told you and max are equal, no number 1 in this team. working out your ‘equal’ team mate is getting paid multiples of your pay and is actually the default number one in the team.

someone comes along and offers the big bucks. deep down you know it’s a step back, but what do you do- stay put, play the number 2 role, pick up a few podiums along the way and be the nice guy of the paddock, while making ok but not superstar money, or take the move, renault might have had something, made some progress and make sure you are financially set for those 50/60years after f1 finishes? he knows he doesn’t have many good years left in f1 to make the ‘fu*k you money’, so he took the offer while he could

Quite right too! If all the people on here that think he was running away etc were rounded up and offered the same millions to reconsider their opinion, I wonder how many would turn it down? smile

There was no potential for him at RB. Probably no potential at Renault, but at least a slither of distant hope and a LOT more money. Absolute no brainer.

IF the announcement that Nissan are going to make on the 28th is the one that has been reported by Reuters then under any normal logic the Renault F1 team is toast.

Yep, it backfired on RedBull/Horner. They had clearly put their main focus on Max, I’m no fan of him but a brilliant racers and I’m sure we can all see it was the right thing to do but... Max on the big bucks and palming Ric off a relatively poor offer. They probably thought they could because he wouldn’t leave. If they’d have shown him more ‘re$pect,’ not just the cash though, he may have stayed. We saw with Webber what a cold place RedBull could be if you’re not the chosen one.
I did enjoy Horner’s look of bewilderment as he talked about DR’s decision to move on though.

It's a policy that's played well for Eddie Jordan over the years.
