Lockdown - Car buying and selling?

I keep hearing of more and more people that I know that have bought or sold cars during lockdown, some travelling quite a distance to do so.

What is the stance since Wednesday on the whole thing? If some dealers are open, I assume they legally able to buy and sell?

I’m keen to buy a new (to me) car, but don’t want to be the one who gets fined because of it!

After lockdown I sold my 5 Series. Then last week I sold a Z4 for my mate. Can't see the issue if you don't shake hands and french kiss them.

I saw two main dealers either opening or in the process of doing so today on my way home from work, one Mercedes and the other Hyundai, both had removed all their cars from forecourt and cars were now back and barriers open.

I'm sure it's never been illegal to buy or sell a car during the lockdown. Car dealers were made to close their showrooms and I think that still stands but they have been allowed to work remotely and deal online. The issues have probably been around viewing and collecting where it might have been dodgy.

If you bought a car now I can't see that you would be risking a fine for anything.

I''m having a car transported to a garage - takes the hassle out of the process. Also I want it cleaned and checked over before I drive it.

P.S. I want to tip the transport driver on successful delivery - what's a suitable amount? He quoted £210 for a 300 mile journey which isn't bad is it?

That sounds really cheap. Who did you use?

A £1 a mile tends to be the expected rate.

I'll let you know once if he does the job right! Yeah i suspect he is coming back the other way and hence really wanted the job.

Car showrooms are still listed as one of the businesses that must remain closed on the relevant .gov site - although distance selling of cars is allowed.
