New Vantage Whining Noise
Discussion
Hi all
New vantage MY 2020. 4k km on the clock. Automatic gearbox. Awesome car however annoying whining noise from drivetrain (?) at 110 - 120 km/h. No matter what speed. Dealer says it’s series standard which I found hard to accept. Anybody with same experience? Cause? Remedy? Any comment is appreciated. Thanks.

It’s almost certainly the diff. Get it changed under warranty. Anyone who says that’s acceptable is trying to avoid a warranty claim. That’s under the assumption that it is in fact a fault and you’re not being ultra sensitive to noise. Early cars did suffer from diff whine.
Advice very much appreciated. Many thanks.Just a few thoughts: When I wanted to know whether the well documented low rpm "gravelly" propshaft noise on my V8 Vantage S was in the norm or not, my local German main dealer´s workshop recorded a sound file and sent it to AML. I didn´t even ask for this, it was all their own initiative - possibly due to the fact that at that time they had only very few AM-experienced personnel. In case your main dealer IS experienced and/or is not keen on such a big warranty work (as they get reimbursed only about 70% of the labour cost in warranty cases) as Bincenzo had stated, it would perhaps explain why they would like to leave it at that. If you insisted they bring the issue to AML´s attention (= sound file?), you would perhaps be in a better position to then escalate the case to the Client Services of AML of Europe (ClientServices@astonmartin.com; hoping that is still correct!). My personal experience with the Client Service - totally unrelated to the above mentioned propshaft noise! - was a very good one and let me finally succeed over the supplying main dealer.

Interesting point about them only paying 70 % of the labour costs , it will still be a very healthy amount per hour for the dealer , never mind the obligation the dealer has to fix warranty issues.Still make a profit on the labour and guaranteed payment , what’s not to like ?

Yes, probably still some profit on the labour but I assume it is the combination of reduced hourly labour rates AND no profit on the parts that makes warranty work relatively unattractive for the main dealer. At least it was my experience that my valued local main dealer was not overly keen to replace a door seal and the rear diffusor under the manufacturer´s warranty. They complied, of course, as there were clear issues (at least in my eyes) but they also stated they would not even file a warranty claim request at AML for the door seal as it would be too time-consuming. This as an example that there might be other aspects why dealers may be reluctant to do certain warranty work.My Vantage (19 Reg around 9k on the clock) suffers from exactly the same dif-whine issue, always the same around 70mph and really grinds on you on a long journey.
I have sent the car back to Aston Martin a few times, however, as of yet they haven't been able to rectify the issue.
Has your dealer been able to come up with anything yet to rectify?

My 2018 Vantage had the same issue - whining noise at circa 70mph but only when on very light throttle - it would go away if more power was applied. However it always seemed to be just at the throttle point you would be at when cruising on a motorway.
Car went back to the dealer who agreed it wasn't right and diagnosed a replacement diff.
Once it was replaced, it was better. My car was one of the first cars so at the time was unsure if others suffered - it sounds like the problem appears on multiple cars.

Car went back to AM dealer three times up to now. Last time they recorded the noise at issue during a test drive. Audio file should then be sent to Gaydon in order to get a decision whether replacement of diff will be approved. That was three weeks ago. So far no answer. Anyway I'll insist on the replacement since noise is a constant annoyance and doesn't appear appropriate to the New Vantage. I'll keep you posted.

I've had the same issue with my 2021 Vantage. 70mph and gentle cruising is when it's worst.
It's been back to the dealer and a sound file sent to Gaydon, who've confirmed that it's "within tolerance" so unlikely that anything will change.
I'm just wondering whether this is "wear" and so I'll end up paying for it to be replaced when the car is out of warranty.?

Mine is the same, around 70 mph and the car whines like it has a straight cut gearbox, had it checked by AM and said it was normal. Can’t have a conversation at speeds above 50 due to the road noise off the tyres…again the dealer said normal.
With your multiple ownership experience of Aston Martins, I expect you disagree with your dealers explanation.
Was your 4.7 noisy when cruising at around 70 mph? Mine is certainly not and that is with 'sport' cats.
Tyre noise is not particularly noticeable either. I did not notice any significant difference, after changing from Bridgestones to Michelins. However, I have experienced dreadful tyre noise with a Mercedes, where engine noise is very quiet and therefire not the dominant cabin sound. Eventually changed to 68db Dunlops which greatly improved the situation. After two sets of those, I have recently replaced them with Michelin Primacy 4 tyres. They are also rated as 68 db (which I understand is an external measurement), but the further interior improvement with tyre noise came as a welcome surprise. So even with the same db ratings, differences can be apparent.
Michelin tyres are of course favoured amongst Aston Martin owners, but I have never heard of Primacy 4 tyres being used on an AM.
As you will know, OEMs on VH Vantages were Bridgestones. I don't know what the factory fit to the Vantage model now.
As you are now aware, some PHers have reported their transmission noise being cured, I hope your dealer will progress your complaint further. A loyal repeat buyer, especially deserves to be looked after.
