Volvo v40 1.5 geartronic or Civic 1.0 auto

Anyone have experience of either of these?


I like the spec & price. I don’t fancy VAG but any other recommendations of similar size & spec welcome. £14k approx to spend

I really like the V40 personally and feel v well built/solid and safe inside but I am curious to know whether the Geartronic boxes are related to the Powershifts used by Ford and same goes for the 1.5l engines that are mated to the auto V40's..are they Ecoboost variants?

The V40 is a Focus underneath, the next one will be all Volvo.

How do you rate the V40 as a used buy..especially the auto petrols? Annoyingly the auto petrols seem in low supply so keeps the prices firm but wondering if there is any merit in spending the extra over say a Leon for example

Are they based on Mercedes? Looks similar inside.

This & the Mercedes A Class are the same car so if you have a Mercedes specialist/Nissan Main Dealer or a decent Indy near you maintaining one isn't a problem, the one thing where the Infiniti is the better car is in the interior on the medium to high spec they're just a nicer place to be.

Infiniti has pulled out of Europe due to their C02 limits but these are a rare sight due to there lack of badge recognition but smart people soon realised they were getting an A Class on the cheap, on the used market people are recognising these as a good buy.

I rate the V40 over the Leon & the price difference isn't as much as you think once you match them up spec wise, the V40 is the nicer of the two interior wise & due to it's Focus base the drivetrain is well proven although the drive isn't quite as good as the Focus but it's slightly better than the Leon.

My problem with both is that I can buy one of these which is better built with a nicer interior than both of the above with a bit more pep & AWD which makes it all adds up to a bit of a no brainer

As a quick aside I think I recall you source cars for people - do you see demand for the rare V40 T5 Cross Country variant, the only one of the range with All Wheel Drive? Fewer than 100 built apparently.

No not really these type of cars only sell to a limited market new or old because they're not really one thing or another.

I'd buy the I300h over it everytime the CT200 doesn't seem to work as well as an overall package.

We bought a 64 plate, 20k miles V40 T3 in 2018 and are very, very pleased with it.

A few weeks after getting it we did a 1,000 mile French road trip so a good time to get used to it. It was brilliant on this long journey. Quiet, c. 45mpg+ when cruising at 110kmh (Any quicker it had a major impact on the economy), excellent stereo and air con. I'd say its good fun to drive but equally relaxing too.

2 years on we're still really pleased with it. Feels very well built. We had the last service at a Volvo indy in Letchworth and he said they just never go wrong.

It did need a minor amount of warranty work and whilst in, we were leant a much newer T3 cross country (2WD) with the newer 2.0 engine. Much, much quicker than mine. Couldn't believe how punchy that was.

I'd certainly recommend a V40 to anyone. I am considering selling in the next year or so as its just a fraction too small for us as my little one is tall for his age so will be getting cramped for him plus the boot isn't huge. Interesting to compare to my FN2 Civic which is far roomier in the rear plus a bigger boot too (as the petrol tank is under the front seats).
