Can someone explain difference In Audi 3.0tdi 45/50 engines?

Hi Guys,

I know there is a difference in the power of the 3.0tdi Audi engines, badged 45/50 on the cars. (45 being 231ps and the 50 being 286 ps). But I’ve read the lower power engine is the same engine just detuned. I’ve just ordered an A6 avant all road in the lower power and was wondering what Audi do to the engine to detune it? Is there any way of remapping etc to get the higher output? Do Audi de tune mechanically via a smaller turbo etc? Any help or advice would be most appreciated...

I do t know the answer - but saw a reasonable difference in MPG between the two tunes.
