That'll be an 'oil' filter, but can't change the titlesmile Just received a Mahle oil filter for my 997.2 C4S and now noticed they seem to come in 2 different size options for the same car:

OX 254 D4 = Diameter 91 x 4 (this is one I have with the green o-ring)
OX 254 D5 = Diameter 96 x 4,5

I've mailed Mahle and asked whether the D4 is ok to fit but have had no reply. I can't take the oil filter cap off to check which one it is now as I'm still waiting for the correct size socket to arrive. If the D4 is not right, I'll change for a D5.

Has anyone had any experience of this? Thanks.

Not the same car ...I have 992 C4S and came up against the same ordering confusion. everything pushes the OK254 D5 ....but for sure the "drawings" come up with the 91 x 4 O-ring ( OEM 948 107 32200 ) Anyway, I had the D5 version and when opened filter cap , no way it takes that bigger O-ring, needs the smaller 91 x 4
I didn't remove so not to stretch and since its only 5k miles about , and the seal is radial compression in use, I left in place and re used, changing the element only.

It s cheap to say , but ......, but I'd bet anything that you have right size from what you state .

( edit if you end up in a bind and I am wrong about size on yous ....pm me and I'll mail you 2 of the bigger 96mm seals in the D5 I have , as I bought 2 filters in D5 size )

Thanks for the info, I guess the only way I'm going to know for sure is by having a look at the existing filter and o-ring on thew socket arrives. I have read on an American site that what I have won't fit, however, Opie Oils asked me about the country version and engine code (Germany & MA 101) before suggesting I write to Mahle. So there may be regional variations.

Thanks for the offer of the D5 o-ring for the housing, do you think I would still be able to use the new filter if it is smaller than the existing one?

I finally changed the oil on my car. Turned into a bit of a nightmare. Adapter for my socket wrench snapped. Also found out that the filter I have is wrong (too narrow centre hole)- after I drain the oil. I just changed the oil anyway and used the old filter. Is it ok to change the filter in a week or so (going on hols in the car) after the right filter arrives or will this be pointless?

Too small centre hole ? are you sure. The new filter just has a slightly narrower entrance which when pressed in place . If you look at the old filter its just folded over for a tight/snug fit . The new one is even slightly conical to aid the start of this .
Least this how it is in my 992
The filter which came out from factory is marked Mahle OX254 .... and the one is used to replace is Mahle OX254 , and with the smaller 91 mm o-ring as in the D4 package . I pressed in ....a dry fit , then removed to check.....sure enough the new filter now "pressed" in the centre top and bottom are same size as the the removed filter.

I compared the two filters for length and width before draining the oil and they looked identical, as did the green o-ring. The only thing I hadn't checked was the inner hole's dimension. I tried the new one gently and it just didn't seem to seat. I then compared the two and the inner hole of the old filter )also Mahle looked quite a bit wider. The old one also seemed to have some kind of black plastic core.

Just to clarify the new filter I have is the OX 254D4. So you think If I just push the filter into the housing a bit harder it should expand the centre hole and seat properly?

Now running the car with old filter and new oil. Not great but this was actually a yearly oil change rather than a scheduled service.

Seems to be a guy in the US had the same issue:

It's looks like you force it on and the felt gives way to fit.

On YouTube both P Tech and Auto Amateur have done oil change videos if that’s any help.
