Stuff that’s made in Britain

The whole coronavirus thing has made me think a bit more about where a lot of the stuff I buy is manufactured and how dependent we now are on cheap imports. It’s also made me realise how many business in this country run on pretty slim margins and vulnerable they’ve been to economic shock.

So I’ve decided that I want to try and buy more British goods where there is a viable alternative. I don’t mind paying a bit more for the privilege but thought I would open it out to the PH collective and get some ideas of British products that people like.

My main purchases so far are some Walsh trainers (very pleased with them and subsequently saw a documentary which showed the factory and the really small team of people who design and manufacture them) and using rapeseed oil as my go-to cooking oil (not that the olive oil I used to use was exactly a cheap import).

What other good stuff is there that might actually help to support our economy now that it’s totally on its arse?

I didnt realise newbalance shoes were made in the UK until recently.

Before I started using them, they confirmed that their shirts are British made (some of their suits/coats are italian cloth)
Have to qualify this, it was 10 years ago.... apparently they now source from China amongst others..... one now off my purchase list...

They might be owned by TATA, but are otherwise British through & through.

I have been trying to buy non Chinese stuff for a while, it is not easy in the UK, a bit easier in some parts of Europe.

I worked for a short while for a company that made tools. Many years ago it used to make all of them in the UK, in the late 90s they transferred a lot of production to Portugal. When Portugal took on the Euro it became to expensive and production was transferred to China, so was what was left of the UK production. I never quite understood how it could be so much cheaper to produce in China as transport and stock costs were so much higher.

I told that plans are being made to move some of the production back to Europe, Bulgaria or Slovakia I am told.

Some are but most aren’t I think. They have made in the UK and made in the US lines but the vast majority are the usual Far East stuff.

Just checked four of mine, all state designed in London, one says made in Malaysia, three say made in China.

Is it really as simple as "made in Britain" though?

I'm no economist but I presume that almost everything I buy or consume is helping to keep people in jobs in Britain.

Where something is made is possibly only a small part of that.

We still do make a lot of stuff in this country, just a lot of it isn’t british owner or stuff you ever think about


For instance, most of unileaver lynx and sure deodorant cans are made in port talbot, and most of Holland and barrats supplements are made right next door!

I had mine for over 40 years and it fell apart.

Mrs Cloggy brought it to them to do a repair, they did a completely refurbish and when she picked it up and asked for the bill they said no bill it is part of our service.

Unbelievable in this time and age.
