Those of you who commute to work on a bike (or have done), what would you recommend up to £3k?

The commute will be 1.5 hours, 2-3 days a week, with a mix of A (80%) and B (20%) roads.

I was hoping for some suggestions rather than blindly looking on ebay/autotrader etc smile

Can you get an NC700/750 for that?

I used a xmax300 for two years, great commuters, loads of storage, going up for sale soon as I no longer commute.

I used an FZ6 for a couple of years, it was bulletproof, and I actually liked it. BUT it was very very peaky, nothing down low and really needed winding up. So much so that I got irritated enough to buy a single... That was for an urban commute though, yours sounds more suited to it.

Assuming it’s just for the commute and you want reliable/cheap to run?

Kawasaki Versys
Honda VFR800
Aprilia Pegaso Strada
ER6F
CBF600
CBR600F
V-Strom
Faired bandit
FZ1 fazer

More urban use I’d agree with a big scooter, but if it’s A and B roads I’d rather have a bike...
Of those, if you can get over the looks of the early ones, I’d have a Versys.

Thanks all,

Not keen on a big scooter as it's mainly M4, A34 and no town riding.

I did think of an FZ6 and tried a 2003 S2 but felt cramped in the leg - I have stupidly long legs! Is the FZ1 any more roomy in the leg?

I owned an Aprillia Shiver for a while and that put me off Aprillia's for a while.

V-Strom sounds interesting, I'll take a look.

I have an XSR 900 as a fun bike, so it's definitely just for commuting.
