Inheriting shares query

My Father died last year with me receiving 40% of his estate, the remainder going to my brother and his adult children. I've said I would take his shares as part of my entitlement, as the others didn't want them. I have the paper share certificates which the executor ( solicitor) now wants so they can be transferred into my name. Three separate companies and modest amounts involved. I thought that shares were held electronically now, so am I likely to receive replacement paper certificates or will I be given an account with them in? If the latter, is it best I open an account for them to be put in first, like a stocks and shares ISA or wait and have it done for me and then transfer them?

Thanks Julian - I was one of the lucky recipients of your £100 prize for knowing the reason behind your PH code
The solicitor/executor of my father's estate has said it won't be till August for the funds to be distributed so the shares aren't coming my way yet. It is only a small amount.

If you need any assistance just give me a shout. I am always happy to help other PHers at no cost.
Take care

There are several institutions which will allow you to hold shares electronically without charge - even Hargreaves Lansdown will. If you are only trading infrequently they might be worth looking at although they charge £12 a trade but with no other charges. Others you can look at might be Halifax & iWeb.

Note that dealing with paper certificates can be a real pain & they are extremely expensive to replace - it could easly run into thousands to do so, depending on what they are worth. When I posted mine off I had to split them into several lots as the cost of new certificates exceeded the maximum RM Special Delivery insurance value.
I don't know what your solicitor is charging to do the transfer but generally it's something that you can do yourself fairly easily. The registrars who look after the share scheme administration are the first point of contact.
