Hi,
Just bought a 2006 987 Boxster 2.7 that’s done 100k.
I am noticing a ticking noise that doesn’t really go away.
The sound is more pronounced from the drivers side rear vent. You can still hear the tick when driving, sometimes it’s less noticeable when the clutch is pressed down.
I’m also experiencing a rough tick over too, not enough where the revs jump up and down but it’s seems to stutter a bit.
The car is due a minor service.
Im also hearing a loud knocking noise which I think is from the rear when going over bumps.
Any advice would be great as I don’t know much about these cars.

A ticking nose at idle is probably just the injectors but you can't usually hear these when driving or even with the door closed. It's probably worth having it checked out especially given the rough idle (which could be anything really)

Knocking noise from the rear is almost certainly either worn drop links or worn trailing arm - also known as the 'tuning fork'. Both pretty easy to change if you're going to DIY it.

Without hearing the noise I really couldn't advise you I'm afraid. Ticking injectors will be audible on the drivers side at idle. If you go round to the passenger side they will likely be much less audible. A different ticking noise really could be anything and could range from don't worry about it to "this thing is going to blow." Sometimes a blowing exhaust will make a kind of ticking noise - why don't you get under the car with a piece of tissue and see if you can spot a leak.

If you don't feel comfortable diagnosing/sizing up the risk yourself, I would probably wait until you can get it checked out by a specialist. Better safe than sorry and all that.

That’s great thanks. I will take a look later and take a video of the ticking and rough idle, might be easier to work out what the issue is.
Could it be something as simple as just needing an oil change as it’s overdue or maybe some dodgy fuel?
The car has only done 6k since 2017 and was last serviced in 2017. Think it’s spent a lot of time locked away for the last 3 years

Look up injector tapping on YouTube (for Porsche's). It can be a few things. Sometimes oil related, other times fuel line.

If it's overdue a service start there. It sounds a bit tappety to me but very hard to diagnose online. Is the oil topped up?

Sounds pretty normal to me. These engines are ticky but can be disconcerting at first. My 2.7 sounded the same. Is oil level ok? Driving ok?

If in doubt or just to put your mind at ease drop into your local OPC and ask if they could have a quick listen.

Thank you all.
Had it serviced with a Porsche specialist, all is well apart from the slight stutter on idle/misfire which no one knows what is the issue is
