A bit of grammar help, for a dunce

Grammar isn’t my strongest point. I know, I know, grammar perfection is a prerequisite for being part of the PH family and I apologise profusely, however...

I’m building a bench as a sort of memorial thing for my wife’s grandad who has recently died. It’ll be from the great-grandkids (my lad and his cousin) and I’m trying to get it ready in a hurry so it’s all set to put in at my FiL’s house whilst he’s out at the funeral (which my wife can’t go to, fk you C-19 ). It’s trying to be something nice that he can come home to after what will be a very crap day for him. Now, I need to engrave the top slat of the bench, is it...

Grandpa’s bench, or
Grandpas bench.

Subtle, but it’ll fk me right off if I get it wrong and have to look at it every time I go over there!

Grandpas bench.

It belongs to Grandpa, so it needs an apostrophe. Grandpa's bench.

It's called a possesive singular...one Grandpa will own the bench.
Grandpas bench means nothing without the apostrophe.

Grandpa doesn't own anything as he's sadly no longer with us and the bench wasn't made when he was (with us), maybe 'In memory of' would work better?

I should have added last night that it was actually his bench (oops, Sunday whiskeys..)! It’s an old iron ended thing that he had in his garden since (at least) the 50’s. I’ve had the iron work blasted and coated so it’s a sort of aged, hammered look and the wood is burned and will be clear coated once the engraving is done, so it all looks old, but is brand new.

There’s a picture somewhere in his house of him and my FiL sat on it when he was a baby

So you've restored his bench, that makes more sense and as per above sounds like a lovely thing to do.
Not sure about burning wood, there are better ways, but you're not on here to ask advice on that!

True. And as the others have said - Grandpa's Bench. The bench that belonged to Grandpa.

Unless you mean it is a bench that it exclusively for the use of other people's grandpas, in which case it might be the second one. Like bird feeder.

Then it would be grampas' bench....a bench for grampas. That would probably fall foul of equality legislation, as grandmas are excluded purely on grounds of their sex.

The implication of grampa's bench is that it was a bench he enjoyed, that is now available to all. But the implication of gampas' bench is that it is exclusively for the use of male grandparents.
