Precious metals and stones

Following on from Lemmonie's post....

Knowing there are a few chaps who are in the business. Where would you recommend someone not in the trade go to buy loose diamonds, platinum bars and interesting coloured metals?

Also, approximate prices non-trade buyers should be paying at the moment.
