I have been on the lookout for a low mileage 00s 600 Hornet and this one popped up on eBay recently that piqued my attention.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/124179098443

The only thing bugging me is that the ad says the bike has yet to have its first service.

Yes, there are only 900 miles on the clock but surely the oil can’t be 18 years old? Just think of the moisture it would have absorbed over the years.

The other thing that bugs me is the YouTube video link where the rider hops on and raked it from cold (with potentially 18 year old oil in the sump!).

What do you lot think?

'Find another'?

Was it RiDE Magazine or Bike in the early noughties that ran a CBR600 for 24,000 miles not servicing it once after the running in service to then strip the engine down and everything still measured within tolerance?

At £3000 I think it’s a bit rich personally. Still on original tyres so you’d need to change those. It will likely need a service and checkover. That’s going to be an extra £400-£500.

For £3500 you can buy a much better bike. I owned one identical to that one, it was my first “big” bike. Great things but they’re not worth that kind of money in my opinion.

I didn’t like the way he was revving it while it was cold either. Probably won’t have done it any harm but still made me cringe.

Equally, try and find another with those miles. I’m not helping much am I!?laugh

£3k for an 18 year old Honda Hornet (not the worst bike in the world by a long stretch, but still nothing particularly special) on 18 year old tyres that’s probably never been serviced?

Tyres would need replacing straight away, and at that age I’d probably be replacing all the rubber hoses too. Chuck in the price of a service, and that £3k bike very quickly becomes a £3.5k bike.

I think I’d spend my £3.5k elsewhere...

Bizarrely it’s had an mot every year doing less than 100 miles a year.

It is too much money but I’d go and look at it out of curiosity. Is the sump plug really untouched, has it really only done those low miles?

If you check his other videos he seems to rev them up from cold. The temp gauge hardly moved on that Hornet.

They are good bikes.
But not £3k good...

They are quite dated now, and feel it.

As mentioned above maybe worth 2k.

I'd look elsewhere with 3.5k to spend. The value of that will drop off rapidly once used.

Personally the lack of service wouldn't bother me, obviously it needs tyres.

Yep, daft as anything that. It's probably fine, as even 18 year old oil that's done bugger all will likely be good enough, but with such a pristine example why not give it 5 minutes warming up before you start the video?

I paid £1200 for my 99 Hornet with 19k on the clock. Not saying mine is the same condition but it's decent for its age and flew through its MOT.

I don't think a Hornet will ever be that sought after and there are so many well kept bikes for sub 2k it doesn't make sense to spend an extra 50% on a bike that needs attention.

TBH I'd rather him do what he did to it that let it sit idling on full choke, with a ton of bore wash if left on full choke.

Does it specifically need to be a hornet? My dad is selling his very tidy 2010 CBF600 for less than that (£2750 asking price I think?)

Many thanks for the replies.

I’m specifically looking for a low miler Hornet in yellow or blue so this one really ticks a lot of boxes.

I’m from NI and suggested paying a deposit and doing an instant bank transfer when the bike courier arrives but he’s insisting on cash for the balance.

It’s just another red flag in a long line of red flags to be honest so I’m going to pass on this one.

Shame as ones like this don’t come up often.

Looks a lot more legit than the other one but still wouldn’t pay that money.

That’s silly money.

I bought a 2013 Sprint GT at Xmas with 2700 miles on the clock.

Bought from a dealer and I paid top price for it....but top price in relation to other bikes of the same age.

For your run of the mill bike low mileage doesn’t increase the value of a bike, it just takes it to the top of the tree relative to similar bikes.

That bike may have low mileage but it’s no better than a 15k mileage bike that’s been well looked after.
