A couple of questions ...

1. Autoglass replaced the Chimeara's windscreen a couple of months back and the rubber trim is starting to come adrift. They say it's only decoration and nothing to worry about. Surely it needs to be sealed/stuck down with something? And if so, with what?

2. It passed the MOT last week (5 years old (the car that is) so it's starting to make me twitchy) but the trusty mechanic at the local service station said that there was a problem with the distributor advance. Can someone explain to me what that is and how urgently it needs to be fixed?

Thanks in advance

Terry

Terry,

After a new wind screen on mine the rubber around it also started coming off. In fact the whole top bit came off at high speed with the roof down

When I spoke to the garage who did it they said its just cosmetic and stick it down with some clear silicone sealent. Took 2 minutes and haven't had a problem since.

Terry,
If the mechanic says there's a problem, then it sounds like he has tried altering the distributor....
ask him what he means exactly.
For a techie descrption of ignition advance, see this - http://gworobec.users.50megs.com/pntign.html
Cheers, Paul.

If you dont have the rubber trim stuck down properly you will get water in the windscreen and it will delaminate ( go white and milkey)

so i would say its quite important its sealed properly and when the car is dry!!!

I would suggest a polyeurothane sealant rather than a silicone one.

hi - i had to recently replace the vacuum advance unit on my 96 4HC, as it was diagnosed on a rolling road session as not working. do a search - you will see a recent thread on this.

there seems to be a mixed opinion that some cars do not have this functioning and it has been 'capped'.

i did get mine replaced - i ordered a part from peninsula - they did a bit of research and got hold of the correct land/range rover part. it's been subsequently fitted and works ok. part costs about £60.

It's not a good diea to run with the vac advance pipe off / capped etc .. the vac adv unit is the only way the engine can sense the running load, and the advance added at part throttle adds torque and reduces fuel consumption. May are loose cos the retaining screws never get tightened and loctited at service time.

Thanks for the helpful comments, will get the rubber round the windscreen done at the weekend.

Spoke to mechanic, problem was that the distributor advance had become detatched and was flopping around in the engine bay. He's put a new bit in place ... but it had "been sucking air" in for up to 1k miles since the last (30k) service. Never knew that I needed to check it was still connected but now I do.

The vac advance hose would have been diconnected during the service, when the ignition timing was checked. Sloppy service - who did it?

Last service was by Harrogate, and yes the ignition timing was checked (my request) during the service. At least that explains what happened ...
