V5 - seller asked us to say we bought it from a garage.

Hiya everyone.
My teenage son has just bought a car and the seller said it was easier and quicker if we complete the V5 online saying we bought from a garage. Why would this be the case and why would we do that? Is it a big deal? it certainly doesn't feel like the right thing to do.

Yes he did have the V5 and we bought the car and I now have it in my possession. He said it would be easier and quicker if I say it was bought from a garage. Why would he say that?

So he's told you it was his fiancee car? is the address on the V5 the same as were you purchased it?

We met him and his fiancee but it was him that did the negotiating - she owned it and it's all over her facebook too. They both work for Aviva (have mutual acquaintances who know this to be true and can be seen on FB). Got his name and address which is where I picked up the car but her name and address is on the VC5.
I've text him and said we want to proceed completing the VC5 properly - pending reply.

You are seriously overthinking this.

Just fill out the V5 on paper or online (whichever you prefer) and forget about contacting the seller and their fiancee.

It’s the seller’s responsibility to inform the DVLA of a change of keeper so I’m confused.

If you have the main part of the V5 that the seller should have signed and posted off to the DVLA then fill it out yourself (complete with a signature) and post it. Or try to do it online ‘as the seller’.

I can't see what the advantage is to the seller, nor the risk to the buyer.

When you notify a change of keeper online it assumes that it is the seller that is notifying the change. As such, the first question it asks whether or not the seller is a motor trader. This is possibly what your seller is referring to.

The only difference is that if you select 'Yes - I am a motor trader' it asks you to input your (sellers) details as well as the new keeper's details. There's no verification required for any of this - you can tell them that Mickey Mouse Motors of 10 Downing St SW1A 2AA sold the car to Mr Donald Duck, and provided Mr Duck's address was input correctly then he would receive a V5.

I really think that you are over thinking this. As long as you are certain that you know the identity of the seller and have a receipt / invoice with their name address and date on it then if you do ever have any issue with parking tickets, Gatso tickets etc then you can refer the ticket back to them.
