Hello,

Was hoping someone could help.

I’m currently bidding on a 993 Turbo on Collecting Cars, although not currently “winning”.

Does anyone have any views on the car - https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/1996-porsche-9...

I will definitely retrial the inside of the car to black leather, I might also respray the car to silver.. or the brave/mad choice of gold.

I’ve been on and off looking for a while and the ideal car hasn’t come up, hence being prepared to retrim etc. It would be a keeper.

I’ve had 4 Boxsters over the years, however, the 993 Turbo was the poster car growing up. I’ve never had a 911.

Many thanks all.

Good grief do car salesman still churn out that drivel?

Sorry but the monologue tells us only that the previous owner was repeatedly taken to the cleaners, and the photographs are arty not useful.

The only useful piece of written information is 'The seller also had a thumbnail-size area of common corrosion in the scuttle panel removed, repaired and repainted in 2017.'

The 993 suffered from two areas of corrosion (over other cars I mean) and one can be the front scuttle, all around the bottom of the windscreen (or rear screen). If the rot is deep, then you are looking at a 1-2k cost, but with the other cosmetic issues that the salesman describes that doesn't sound too bad does it?

I'll keep reading, but I'm feeling very nauseous....

Why on earth would it need a new clutch at 37k? Even if it has spent it's life stuck in London traffic, it seems a bit odd.

But I'm sure you can fix it all. Arena red is nice is real life.

Thanks OC, appreciate you taking the time to review. I’ll have a sleep on it, however, safer option is probably to go through a dealer - not too many cars around with circa 50k on the clock.

Thanks again.

If you plan to respray silver then just buy a silver 993 turbo. A respray would damage the value.

You could always have it wrapped.

The arena red was a launch colour for the 993 turbo so is period correct.

As said above, to respray will damage value, just find a silver car.

Also, have you driven one? They’re not as involving as a Carrera, A bit ‘point and squirt’ type of experience. If it’s just the shape with the rear deck you love then fair enough, but if you value the driving experience you may be a tad dissatisfied.

My money would definitely be on a C2 S.

Lovely Spider you have by the way cool

Arena red is a great colour. Call and speak to Matt at Fearnsport 01327 856993. Lovely guy. He would be able to clue you up about the car.
If you want a silver 993 turbo 4. Buy a silver car. I would not recommend doing a colour change.

In fairness I burned through a clutch in 10k miles in London and that was a car with much less torque

Could be just normal wear then.

If you want a 993 Turbo, then this one with low miles needing work looks like a good option if you don't change the exterior colour.

IF you get if for a decent price.

I'd change the interior to black or Rubicon Grey, put some decent tyres on it and drive it like I'd stolen it for a few months to see what needs fixing mechanically and bodyworkedly.

But as said above, the vanilla Carrera is thought by most to be the more rewarding/involving machine, and you could get a good silver one and mod it lightly to be your perfect analogue toy.

Thanks all.

For me, and this makes no rational sense, I want one purely because it was the car of my dreams in my younger years.

That car was silver, also seeing Porsche’s Gold Project has got me thinking about gold...

I’m looking to have the car for decades so it’s more important that the car looks the way I want it, I did consider wrapping - any idea how much it costs to wrap a 993? Thought it may be tricky with the tail.

At the moment it looks like the car will go for around £100k (might be higher) - any idea if that represents value considering miles etc?

Thanks again for your insights.

Then knock yourself out - sounds like fun.

I don't follow values closely, but AFAIK the turbos usually go for well over 100k. There doesn't seem to be anything 'wrong' with this one.

But as someone else said, ring Fearnsport and ask - they've done well out of the previous owners.

Black interior, wrap it in Gold, and it'll retain it's value for your children, or if you have none, I'll buy it off you for what you paid for it, taking into account a substantial discount due to all this help.

I was lucky enough to be able to go to the launch of the 993 Turbo at Millbrook in May 1994 where the majority of (if not all) the cars there were all Arena Red metallic, so of the period. Hardly anyone ever ordered that colour in the years that followed...!

The most memorable moment was being taken by a pro' driver on the top bank at max-speed (190ish) where the G-forces on my neck (crash helmet on) were painful.

Some of the cars ordered in Arena Red metallic with Midnight Blue leather were done so in error as the big A4 paper ordering folder we had from PCGB showed the colour code for Midnight Blue the same as Cashmere Beige. It took until a customer order arrived with us for us (and PCGB) to realise smile

That must have been a great experience, that much power back in the 90’s would have been phenomenal.

I see you’re from St Andrews - I spent a couple of years in Guardbridge many many years ago.

Any views on the car and the value? Looks like you have decent experience smile

Completely understand OP. I’m guessing I’m about 10 years older than you as I feel the same about a wide bodied late 80s car.

Will watch the auction with interest...

I wasn’t expecting it to end up below £100k. What does that tell us?

Just under £103k with the buyer's commission.

Not all the lots seem to be making their reserves.

It's a dangerous site to visit - there are a lot of temptations.

I didn’t... I hovered over the bid button towards the end to up my bid.... then didn’t.

I’ve seen other dealer cars around 120k and that’s probably a safer option, this plus trying to get wrapped and retrimmed during some level of lock down meant I sat it out.

Obviously as soon as it was won... I regretted not bidding again.

There is one for sale with 2,200 miles - it’s a lot more and I wonder if it would be too much of a garage Queen to use semi regularly. Going to think about it.

Thanks everyone for your input - will definitely buy one.. if you see anything that’s of interest. Let me know.

Thanks again

An Arena Red 993 Turbo (911 HUL UK press car) was on my bedroom wall as a yoof, along with a white Countach QV5000, a black F40 and a moody, dark image of an XJ220. Nine times out of ten whenever mrs asks what I'm daydreaming about, the answer is one of those.

I truly wish it was I who won this auction but I was about £90k short biglaugh

OP, I concur with the pervious comments regarding buying a silver car, it'll be much less hassle in all aspects. If you want to go down the gold route, either Topaz or Litchfield can spray paint protection onto the existing paint and then paint over it in any colour, so it looks like a proper spray job but is totally reversable.

Small world!

Yes, the performance was off the scale at the time where I seem to remember someone recording a 0-60 of about 3.6seconds.

No idea on the value on one of these as it's not my day-to-day dealings seems about right. It's one of the prettiest 911s but not the best 993 to drive in any sense and never re-paint one as it's the originality that makes the car.
