Tell me, am I being a f@nny!
Discussion
So I've bought a lovely 3 year old 991.2GTS with 7k miles. GT silver, very nice condition with just a few minor blemishes.
This is a big 'dream' purchase for me so means a lot.
The car has a couple of small stone chips on the bonnet and spoiler and a few unsightly marks/blemishes on the spoiler lip.
So I've just had the front end PPF'd and put a new splitter on.
I'm now finding myself thinking how do I get the car perfect but I know I won't get the money back for this expense on ultimate sale/px and I also don't want to go down the route of having a garage queen which I'm too afraid to drive.
Is it just me that has this (borderline OCD) obsession with their pride and joy?
I'm already £2k in worth of 'enhancements' and thinking where do you draw the line? I think therapy may be the cheaper option!
And I've already scuffed the underside of the new spoiler lip reversing up my drive. Part of me is annoyed (at myself) the rational part of me thinks that's it doing its job.
I think I need help. Am I alone here?!!!

Do whatever makes you happy fella. Drive it, don't drive it, PPF it and cuddle it in the garage or grab it by the scruff and fling it down a gnarly B-road. What matters is that you enjoy it.
Spot on!For me, I'm all about using it as much as possible, if it gets dirty, it gets dirty! I've done 15k miles in 2 years - taking in account I commute to work via Vespa, train and tube - and have the 'dog car m140i' for everything else.
It's just one of those cars that you can't help but drive and drive, which for me is what its all about, but do whatever makes you happy!
You paid what 70k, 80k for the car?
If it annoys you and it only costs a grand or so to sort, why wouldn't you. The car will depreciate anyway so don't get obsessed with not getting your money back, you bought it to enjoy so do whatever makes you enjoy it.
In short yes you're being a f@nny

I think it depends on the reason you bought it, to drive or look at. I have a classic porsche worth a similar value and drive it very enthusiastically, i polish it and care for it but ultimately bought it to drive. I have had it for a number of years and one day I will sell it but thats when I will sort the blemishes.
Every Porsche I have owned had had adventures and has been stretched. Some have had scratches and dents, and that is OK.
I keep them in good condition, but the reason they have wheels instead of table leges is that they were designed to move. Obviously I understand the collector view which is to keep a car perfect.
I pick up my cars new from the factory in Zuffenhausen and immediately thrash the hell out of them- never had a problem. I get the 3M put on the morning I pick them up and head straight for the track. Within a month the RS cars will need new tires and that is just fine.
It is very much an individual decision, but for me the car as a static thing means that all of the engineering design to build a performance car is of no value as it will never be used...My RS below was three days old when I ran it at the Nürburgring as I do with all my cars.

Splitters are to be considered consumables so don't worry about that. Paintwork is a personal thing. Some like it dirty and some like it shiny. With the lovely weather and it being 3yrs old, I'd probably sit in the sun and give it a nice clay bar all round the non ppf'd bits and then some sort of decent coating like a wax or a ceramic product. This will make it look better and also ease the periodic cleaning after thrashing it's tits off ;-)
Thanks for all the replies. Superb advice and 'free' therapy!
That all makes complete sense. I think I'll get the rest of the car ceramic coated and then just dive and enjoy the thing. I can always spend some cash on her later down the road if she starts to look a little tired but you're right, too nice a car not to drive and enjoy!
As the current times underscore, we're only here once and you're a long time dead!

For folks like the OP you almost need 2 of the same car - one to cherish and keep pristine and the other to drive and enjoy.

Uber fanny!
Get out and drive the bloody thing. Had an hour in mine earlier, no need to go mad, nice and steady, relatively clear roads, warm and sunny. Splendid.
This ^^^^^ just taken the 992 on an 80 mile round trip to B’ham and back for work and detoured via a bit south Warks. I have my first stone chip, and it p1sses me off, but sport plus exiting the 30 out of Inkberrow, you soon forget about it. Its a long weekend, I’ll spend Monday cleaning and polishing it.Get out and drive the bloody thing. Like your GTS, took me a long time and a lot of ambition to buy my 911, a big purchase so bloody well enjoy it before it starts raining again

Use it in any way you see fit, but whatever you do - don't have regrets, so if polishing and just looking at it floats your boat then job done.
Slightly embarrassingly I picked up nearly new 718GTS end of January, and due to various reasons (including being in Oz for the whole of March) I've only racked up about 600 miles on it.
There's no right or wrong, its whatever works for you. Enjoy the view, enjoy the drive, mix it up and do both

Similar story here. I recently bought a 991.2 GTS in GT Silver with just 1500 miles on it. The car is like new, not a single stone ship anywhere, so I've had that 'new car' feeling towards it, in that I've been cautious about using it. However, I've now had it all PPF'd and and ceramic coated etc so will start to us it anger and accept the signs of usage that will come, but I've done what I can to preserve the original paint. I was like this with my (brand new to me) GT4 until I went on my first proper Euro drive and then the driving enjoyment makes you realise it's ultimately about the driving not the polishing etc. This is a big 'dream' purchase for me so means a lot.
