Hi

My wife is after a new phone. Budget is up to £200. She has an older Nokia at the moment.

Not too large.
Long battery life.
Good camera. (In reality just for family snaps rather than anything high end)
Not too bloaty.
Not interested in secondhand

Nervous about honor and huawei in terms of support moving forward.
Seen the various Moto G8s but a little confused about what would suit her.
Oppo A9 looks good but is large.
Nokia 6.2 looks distinctly average.

Thanks

Mike

My Mi A2 Lite is very good. I'll certainly never buy a "flagship" phone again.

A little over budget but the Pixel 3a is now available for £279 and is a cracking phone for the money..

Tough to look past one of the motos at this kind of budget, its all you need in a phone and the battery life of the power should make others hang their heads.

Make sure anything you buy is "Android One" which means it will get better OS support.

Interestingly that offer expires 2nd June. Until a few days ago the Pixel 4a was set to be announced soon after - so i'm holding on to see if it comes down further.

Pixel 4a has been pushed back to July 13th.
Pixel 3a at £279 is a cracking deal, plus CPW offer a £50 mastercard prepaid card with it, making it £229. I have one and love it, it is no worse than any of the expensive phones I've have previously.
The moto g8 power is the next best option at that price, decent camera, good enough performance for 99% of people and unmatched battery life.
Any of the recent moto phones will be good enough for most people really, just a shame their software support isn't the best.

My son has a Vodafone Smart 10 and I'm staggered at what you can get for £100.

The screen appears to be better than an iPhone 7 (which is perfectly good). It does face recognition, the battery lasts him all day (teenager, constantly fiddling with the phone), call quality is good.

Interesting but I cannot see any reference to the offer of a £50 mastercard prepaid card with it on their website.

I am probably being really slow and missing something obvious - could you possibly point me in the right direction, please?

Of course, it isn't very obvious.
You have to go onto the pixel 3a page and when you move the mouse back to the search bar, a window pops up with the offer. It has been documented elsewhere on the forum, potentially with screenshots of how to get it to show up.

Cheers

I'm a big Moto fan but their cheaper options don't support contactless, if that is a consideration.

My Xiaomi has outlasted a number of other mobiles I had over the years. I got it cheap brand new online. Camera isn't great though well not on mine but maybe improved on newer models.

I bought a Moto G8 Plus last November for 180 and it has been great. it is a bit boring to look at but the camera is much better than any previous Motos I have owned. The Moto G and Moto One range is confusing - a real mix and match of parts. The old (ISH) G7 power seems to still get great reviews.

I would love a Xiaomi, but the embedded spyware has always put me off. Honor do some great phones, but there is always the risk that Google might pull the plug on the Play store as they are part of Huawei.

I'll second that. My kids had the Pixel 3, bought by their mum, at over twice the price but my 3a seemed to be essentially the same phone but in plastic.

I paid £399 for mine but it came with a Chromebook worth £200.

I'd say at £279 it's a bargain.

I moved from an iPhone X to a Pixel 3a and really rated it - the only reason I went back to iPhone was for wider compatibility with everything in the house etc...

I’d really recommend the 3a esp at essentially £230!

I don’t get the love of the Moto handsets I found the camera quality and shutterspeeds to be dire even for occasional family use - that’s not a comparison with other phones before I am lambasted for comparing it to a flagship, that’s just a general observation of the quality on a bigger screen.

You are right about Moto cameras and Motos in general. I had a few, mainly through laziness and they are very inconsistent since Lenovo took over. Given the price gap has shrunken, a Pixel 3a is very appealing.

Bought one for the missus, £130!
She loves it, but then isn't bothered by lack of NFC.

My Honor 10 Lite is still going strong about a year after purchase. I use gmail, Google Maps, Waze daily no issues. It recently updated itself to Android 10 with no issues. Fingerprints get me into online banking and I can even pay for my shopping with it (NFC).

People often ask me if it's the latest Galaxy or Iphone. Think I paid £180.

I've had £700-900 phones on contact in the past. Didn't really seem much different.

I'm not that bothered if China wants to spy on me. UK and USA do already so who cares!?

I need a handset. Two in fact. One personal and one for work.

My current personal one, a Samsung, was about a week old when I left it on the roof of my van and drove off. It smashed the screen, was not insured, so I have been using it like that for 2 years.

I'd quite like to get off the bandwagon of having a £500 to £1000 phone in my pocket to lose/drop etc. I saw someone today drop an iphone.

Looking on ebay, I see https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Brand-new-Samsung-Galax...

Is it fake? Stolen? Or just cheap cos its an old model? Not new?

It's six years old. It runs Android v5, v10 is current. An entry-level brand new Samsung will be about thrity quid more and better in many specs.
