Germany outlaws speed camera alerts

The new Road Traffic Regulation in Germany prohibits the use of devices that alert users to the locations of fixed and mobile speed camera locations.

We recommend that you disable speed camera alerts before and while driving in Germany.

You can, however, reactivate these alerts for travel outside Germany.

Yeah I had an email from TomTom this morning about this. TBH, I already thought it was the same rules as in France. The annoying thing about speed cameras over here is that they are stealthy AF. No signs and yellow paint here.

They've been illegal in Spain and Portugal for years, although GPS based warnings are OK.

More like they don't want people to slow down for the camera then speed back up straight after

My Garmin outlines "Dangerous road segments" in France which invariably contain a speed camera! They can last upto 10km in my experience.

I wonder if the same can/will apply in Germany?

To be fair, I don't think I've seen one in Germany that hasn't been placed in a 'danger spot'.

You never see them on autobahns or other unrestricted roads (i.e. no speed limit, or national speed limit applies like our NSL signs) - just in school zones active during school hours, or at roadworks, or on the entry to towns/villages.

You'd also never see one just set up to catch people accelerating early out of a town/village.

...although there's nothing to say that this law is not the start of placing them everywhere

If the purpose of the cameras is revenue then there would be no point in warning of their presence.

If the purpose of the cameras is to prevent people from speeding then would be no point in warning of their presence.
