MOT due in two weeks time - I don't know if my usual garage are working.

When do we think the six month rolling extensions might end?

What notice beforehand are they likely to give?

I thought it was introduced for a 12 month period, correct me if I am wrong though.

Other garages are open, but the easiest thing to do would be to call the normal place that you use and find out for yourself.

I don't think there's any need for extensions now, almost all garages round here are open and able to adhere to latest regulations.

Ford dealer cancelled ours for first week in April, and they called and other week and said when can we bring it in,

Now as im shielding the cars not used, so dropped it Monday night and fetched it Tuesday afternoon.

Quite glad really as didnt want it lagging on and in 6 months time every man and his dog trying to book in etc.

I had my MOT done at the end of Feb, but the local garage didn't have a slot for the service until the first Tuesday of lockdown. Took the car round left the keys on the counter, job done. They have never closed and have continued MOT's and servicing as normal for every customer, strolled past yesterday and the forecourt had about 7 cars all being worked on or waiting. The owner said work slacked off briefly but that seemed to have more to do with customers just assuming they'ed shut up shop, the phone had never stopped ringing. It's one of those family businesses runs on reputation.

Your car, van or motorcycle’s MOT expiry date will be extended by 6 months if it’s due on or after 30 March 2020 - but you must keep your vehicle safe to drive.
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-m...

So I'd suggest the MOT extension is for 6 months from end of march until the lockdown ends...

Have you checked to see if your cars already been extended. Mine was automatically until November

My MOT was due on May 18th and got automatically extended last week to the 18th of November. Seems like there is little point automatically extending MOTs now.

The legislation can be amended quickly - I expect it will go back to normal in July.

As I understand it, you will not know if your car has the 6 month extension until 7 days at most before it is due. You can keep checking the gov website and check your tax/mot dates to see if it's applied as the time gets closer.

Actually, this states the extention applies to due dates until 30/03/21. You only get one extension though.

As does this.

My car is due next Friday. This morning the MOT website still said Friday, now it says November.

It'll be speculation which is pointless and gets you nowhere. You're also likely to be able to get an MOT locally which, again, makes such speculation irrelevant.

I read on another forum that if you get it done at the moment when you don't have to, the MOT is only valid for a year from the date of test - ie if you get it done a couple of weeks before the expiry date, you lose those weeks.

Is that true? Thinking about it, maybe that only happens once the extension has been applied??

That's correct as the legislation stands today, but it can be amended at any point by parliament. I would expect DfT would give notice that they plan to amend it - the actual parliamentary process won't take that long.
