R5 GTT - Ferrari 458 Speciale - Clio V6!?
Discussion
I think I have had a breakdown of some nature this week, and what a week its been!
I think lockdown has got to me somewhat and its sent me a bit doolally and I guess it all really started a few weeks ago. You know what its like when men start shopping, especially for cars, it can quickly get out of hand.
I only needed to buy a new centre exhaust mount for my Clio 182 Trophy and ended up buying a full Milltek exhaust, new headlights, a private number plate, new springs, rear dampers, wheel centre caps, bushes, rubber, mounts, and a load of other bits and bobs that I thought I would get replaced.
But I think that this little mishap really kicked me into another level of 'needing' to spend (waste) money on cars!
A friend of mine then sent me a link to an advert for a restored 50k mile Tungsten Grey R5 GTT. The dealership was only 2 miles from me so thought it would be worth half an hour of my time to pop and look at it (with the possible idea of buying it, and then selling my 104k mile original 5).
They were asking £23k of it, which I thought was a bit strong, but they are selling it on behalf of the owner who set the price. It was a nice car, but its missing the original service history and as with all restored 5's its lost quite a few of its original features. The paint finish overall was great, but there are parts that on the original paint that has a near textured finish and this of course was missing. The engine was nice and original too but it was missing the all important anti-perc fan and wiring so hot starting would be a nightmare!
So I decided that mine was better (although with double the mileage) and I left it.
As I was walking out I noticed a stunning Ferrari 458 Speciale, in the glorious red with the painted stripe, my ultimate dream car! I've always said I would get one for my 40th and I've been working hard towards it, but when the owner of the garage insisted I should take it out for a drive, I thought "I wonder if I should just do it and buy it now a few years early!"

What an incredible car, I mean, I have never driven anything like it at all, it was just such an event and it made me want to buy it immediately.
I am working towards obviously paying cash for one, but with not quite having the full funds yet (as I'm not yet 40) and knowing there are some incredible deals around at the moment I wondered if I might be able to get a great finance deal. The owner of the garage gave me some incredible numbers from a proposal he did for another customer a few months ago and I thought, yeah, I'll do it. The residuals are (were) so strong on the Speciale that the payments were unbelievably low.
As its down the road from my house, we popped by the house whilst on the test drive and I showed the wife. Based on the numbers, she told me to go for it! So all good at this point, and so I said I would give them my RRS on SOR and they would go away and get fresh figures.
As a serial car buyer I had my usual rose tinted car buying glasses firmly on. Walking round in a daze of potentially buying my dream car early I had totally and utterly forgotten about how COVID-19 will have effected the way lenders lend against cars of this value, or in fact any value! I popped back the following day and the figures had changed dramatically since the quote for the other client a few months ago.
Due to the current uncertain times, the guaranteed future value dropped from £247k in 4 years down to £160k, so very nearly a £100k drop! This obviously dramatically changed the required deposit and monthlies and after a sensible chat with the wife, whilst I could afford it, it just didn't make sense to take the risk right now and decided to put that to one side and go back to my target of buying one for my 40th.
I am an impulse purchaser of cars and getting that far and not actually buying the car left me just wanting to buy anything in the meantime. I had mentally made the decision I wanted to buy something, so now it was a case of finding anything else! I considered a 360 Challenge Stradale that they also have there, but its black and I am one of those believers that my first Ferrari should be red!
I started looking at lots of other cars I have been searching for over the last 10 years or so. In particular the Renault Megane R26.R and the Clio V6. I am obviously aware that all of these cars are wildly different, but there is never any logic in what cars I buy and I am sure a lot of members on here are the same.
I have always wanted a Titanium Silver Ph2 Clio V6 and a Luna Grey R26.R. I've looked at a few but they haven't ever been quite right, either with too high mileage, not OEM or not being a colour I would choose. I found an R26.R on the PH classifieds and was speaking with the dealer about it and a few other cars in his stock. He was selling the Megane on behalf of a regular customer of his who is a car collector. I thought the price was a bit high for the car by maybe £4k based on other cars available and the fact there were a few small 'modifications' that I would want to change back to OEM.
The conversation eventually turned onto Clio V6's and he said that a lovely one had just been advertised on here. I had checked earlier in the day and all that was available online were silver ph1's and Iliad ph2's - He said, "its done 11k miles and its in silver"
Called the guy immediately, he had only just put it up for sale on here so i organised to see it first thing this morning. I have never seen a car like it! I've seen NEW cars that are dirtier than this, it was simply perfect. The history is incredible, with every single receipt, and also a fully documented underside/suspension nut and bolt refresh undertaken in 2018. I had already decided I was going to buy it.
We did the deal and it came straight home with me. I guess some things are just meant to be right? So basically, this week, I popped out to see a Renault 5 GT Turbo, nearly bought a Ferrari 458 Speciale and I've ended up with the best Clio V6 for sale in the UK!
So the V6 joins my collection and sits with my original R5 GTT and my 182 Trophy. Only question is now, do I part ways with my R5 GTT and go and also get the R26.R!?
Very much a whirlwind this week, and I almost certainly need to speak with a therapist -

I love the Renault V6.
I was watching a car throttle clip on youtube which said that Porsche helped with the development of the mk2 V6. Looking at the rear suspension I can believe it - it looks identical to the rear end of the 987/986 Boxster!
Unbelievably clean underneath as you say.

haha great story, that is indeed one hell of a week! Looks like you ended up with a great car though, albeit I'd be scared to use it being that clean!
R5 - Trophy - V6 sounds a great garage to me.
I'm part fascinated/part concerned over the value/finance situation with the Ferrari. I wonder if there are owners out there who purchased a few months ago, whether they're pleased to have bought when there was a good deal on the table, or very worried about the possibility of suffering a huge loss!

I think that they should be fine as long as their deal is regulated and has a guaranteed agreed valuation at the end of the term. A good friend of mine, got an unbelievable finance deal on a Vanquish S a couple of years ago, and the values of them have fallen through the floor. To get out of it early, he's something like £35-40K the wrong way. R5 - Trophy - V6 sounds a great garage to me.

But his future value was guaranteed, so he's just going to hand it back and walk away. In fact he was meant to hand it back in April but due to the current situation they aren't collecting it so its just sat in his garage.
He got in on the monster deals Aston Martin were doing in December too so he now has two!

Love it! The V6 looks immaculate, they’re a stunning car.
As a previous owner of a PH2 V6 and 172 and currently have a 182, I can only approve.
Hopefully going to pick up a Trophy next weekend too much to the wife’s disapproval
Pictures of the R5 and Trophy needed please!
I can certainly oblige on a few photos of the Trophy and my R5. As a previous owner of a PH2 V6 and 172 and currently have a 182, I can only approve.

Nope not had a Trophy yet but always fancied one so will have to see what happens next week

The 5 is great for nostalgia, but in todays world it feels quite slow. The Trophy is incredible for what it is. I actually owned my car for 10 months back in 2008 after selling it I deeply regretted it for many years. Decided in 2018 that I would treat myself to another one and whilst looking, I randomly found my old car for sale, so bought it back and have its pretty much been completely refurbished over the last two years. Nope not had a Trophy yet but always fancied one so will have to see what happens next week

You'll have to check out cliotrophy.co.uk if you haven't already. Its a great little forum for owners and its great for knowledge!
Good luck for next week!!
So currently I've managed to squeeze all my Renaults in the garage, but its tight with my boys ride on cars in there too, so might move the 5 back into storage for this summer so I can enjoy the V6 with more space in the garage. Otherwise i'll just be panicking that my children are driving their Toylander into the side of it!

Thanks! Yes I sold to Lucas - good guy.
He is! Having him 2 miles from my front door is certainly going to be dangerous for me... I will undoubtedly buy a lot of cars from him...Meanwhile I will continue to work hard to get my ultimate dream car (hopefully before my 40th and before the school fees get too out of hand) - I've driven some incredible cars, but that was another level of experience.

What a clean V6, almost looks like it's brand new and what a great collection, you lucky man!Love your garage too, if you have time could you tell me the internal dimensions as it looks a very similar size to the man cave I'm building
Never knew it was so easy to instantly hate someone so much.
Love all the cars, especially the T!
Here’s your new plate on my friends old T, with mine in the back ground.

The Challenge 210 was a great car and part of me wishes I hadn't sold it. I only had it a few months, but it hardly dropped any money. The bluetooth exhaust was a gimmick but quite a bit of fun, my boys loved the popping and banging. Its basically a JCW, but they all came in that wonderful grey colour.
It drove and handled really well considering the tyres were really quite skinny! I didn't take it on track, but it stood up well on 5am Sunday morning blasts, but the standard brakes were not overly impressive...
Mini seemingly knock out a special edition car every few years, but these are one special edition that has become really quite desirable...
goes off to search the classifieds.....
