Conflicting info from apple vs forums info on this..

I want to download a 4k film to my ipad pro (2019) and then stream to projector via the apple lead (hdmi)

Can it be done? or is it just an hdr version of 1060?

Tech supports suggests that in playing video it will switch from 1080p to what ever resolution the video is up to 4K (30 Hz)

It seems it can like you say but trying to actually download 4k from itunes or any other source is proving hard, they should be 60gb+ files and that doesnt happen and itunes doesnt physically give a 4k option to choose.

I might go and get a 4k apple tv later but i’m not sure that downloads to the 64gb Internal hard disc (our internet speed wont support streaming 4k)

From memory, the 4k apple tv memory is for apps, maybe the installing the Netflix app On the atv allows film storage of the netflix 4k films

I think the best solution is get 4k films onto ipad as it has 1tb of storage that i dont use

It’s not possible to download 4K from iTunes to an iOS device only HD. https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT207949

And you’re correct regarding the appleTV it only uses the storage for apps/games.

4K can only be streamed on Apple devices.

So how on earth can apple claim that the iPad Pro can play 4K to a 4K monitor?

I found a site this morning that allows my iPad to download a 4K film so trying it currently, at 30gb of 85 so far..

The device can do it, if you have a relevant 4k source, but AppleTV+ doesn't allow downloads of 4k content.

Apple Support Document said:
You can download a copy of an HD film to your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac or PC, but you can't download a 4K version. You might be able to download Dolby Vision and HDR versions to your iOS, iPadOS and macOS devices.

I’ll see how i get on with this 4k film i’m downloading currently, guessing i’ll need an app of some kind to play it though as it wont appear in the TV app provided by apple.

VLC may play it - as will many other media players on the app store.

Will just depend on what limits Apple have put into the system.

Because it can. The key bit though is this “ An Internet connection fast enough to watch high-quality content.”

As 4K movies are large files Apple is expecting you to stream them.

Just a thought can you explain a bit more about your projector setup? Any reason why you can’t be on WiFi or tether when connected to your projector?

Satellite broadband frown unlimited data but speed drops to 15-20mb during the day, 50mb + after midnight, So streaming 4k would be nigh on impossible id imagine, at some point we’ll get 5g i’m sure as we need to review the satellite system next year, though elon might have his new system up and running in europe by then..

But for now i have a 1tb ipad pro that’ll be very useful if i can master the playback..

Success!

Used Xbox1 with blueray player to watch a 4K disc, no better than HD.

Then used iPadpro running ‘infuse’ app to watch downloaded 4K film and it was amazing, definitely a noticeable improvement over HD, but some fluctuations in light Occasionally, transmitted to 8ft screen using JVC projector so could be some settings on this or in the app on iPad, I just plugged and played so will have a fiddle with settings

Thanks for help smile
