Is anyone else enjoying Deep Rock Galactic at the moment?

Whilst I am increasingly buried under a mountain of games I want to get through, I was asked by a friend to pick this up so we could play co-OP and I am having a blast. It is the instant classic I didn't know I needed!

The premise is very simple, being that you will (ideally) play as one of a four man team of space-faring dwarves who are dropped out of orbit onto alien planets in a mining pod that drills deep underground. In procedurally generated underground caves, you must mine your way around collecting minerals other items whilst fending off waves of aggressive alien wildlife.

I've heard it described as Minecraft meets Doom with a bit of Left 4 Dead thrown in. Whilst I am only a couple of missions in, I am really enjoying it. Definitely one of the best games I have played in ages and recommended as one to check out.

I have been playing this and it is superb. Fantastic art direction and styling, great gameplay and game design. The graphics are simplistic yet the overall effect of the visuals, sound and gameplay creates a brilliant mix of tension and action. The feeling of pushing deeper into the caverns, the trying to balance grabbing materials, managing ammo reserves and defending against increasingly strong resistance from the local fauna is something no other game has done before.

The classes for the different characters are all excellent and there is no weak pick in the lineup and no pick that is so strong it invalidates any of the other choices. While my personal preference is for the driller class, all of the classes bring their own utility tools which are just as important as their weapon selection. Using the gunner's ziplines to get up to a high wall, then having an engineer shoot his platform gun under the gunner's feet to create a ledge as a starting point to mine into a ceiling is a good tactic for reaching fossils and minerals in hard-to-reach places like the ceiling of a cavern with 100 foot drop the floor. Another good tactic involves using the driller to drill straight to the drop pod at the end of the mission, with the gunner dropping shield generators behind the group to block the tunnel from the aliens while the driller uses the drills and map to carve a path ahead.

The game is infuriating when someone does something silly at the end of an hour-long expedition, like panicking in the dash for the drop pod and falling off a huge ledge. It can be very difficult to rescue them and get back on track to the exit route with enough time before the pod leaves. It's important to plan your exit with some care to prevent these kind of cock ups.

Overall, an excellent game, I think it's an instant classic. It's probably the most fun co-op game I've ever played.
