Hi

I'm new to the forum after lurking for an awful long time, and decided to join.

As I first post I thought a good way to introduce myself is to post up my car - a 2015 Audi A5 3.0TDI Black Edition Plus.

I know there isn't a great deal of love for Audis on the forums but I have had several in the fleet over past, beginning with a silver 1990 Audi 80 1.8E, 1997 Audi A6 2.5TDi, and a more recent 2006 Audi A6 2.7TDi Avant which my wife now owns and has so far done 245,000 miles. I also had a 1999 1.8T VW Passat which I bought back in 2004 and sold in May last year with 285,000 miles.

There's a bit of a theme here in this pattern of ownership - something quite safe, capable, practicable (expect the tiny boot in the Audi 80), plain I suppose, but I have chosen cars mainly for camping trips, and road trips. Taking the A6 Avant to France has meant return trips with a 100 or so litres of wine!

Buying the A5 was an itch to scratch. I love the look and the shape of it and I wanted something that would have a bit more oomph, and relatively better handling. As, until obviously recently, I commuted 35 miles each way to work I had to think of getting a decent blend of performance and economy, so I went for the 3.0TDi. I chose the Black Edition plus which is Daytona Gray a colour that works well with the gloss black trim and is a bit different to others that I have seen on the roads.

So what do I think? Yep, not a true sports car, but I went for this knowing that it was more of a a grand tourer, good for my commute, longer road trips and the occasional blast along twisty roads. My first proper trip was up to Scotland last year, staying in Garve, and heading out on drives to Gairloch and Ullapool and I loved every minute of it. I know that some people have complained about the stiff suspension, but for me, I quite like the firm but quiet ride. Same with the steering - people say it slacks feel but it feels tight enough for me for the type of driving I do.

Anyhoo! Great to have joined.

Facelift A5 still one of the best looking cars on the road I reckon, not seen one in this colour before but it just looks so right, handsome but restrained and not chavvy like the white ones with black wheels

Interiors still look great too, Before screens took over only being let down for me by The massive gear selector. Why couldn’t it use the smaller one from an A3?

What do you get in a plus edition?

I had a PFL 3.0tdi A5 before my S5, loved it..... the B8 Coupe shape does have a timeless quality to it

Great car OP, bet it really has some oomph in gear! The 3.0 TDI must be very rapid, what’s the mpg like on a cruise? Boring I know, but sure it’ll make a difference to the pocket.

Is the plan for this to take it to the mega miles like the A6?
Scotland has some beautiful roads, and they all seem to link nicely together which makes going for a blast so much easier!

Had this exact model for a couple of years. Great cars. GT feel. Quite cost effective to run. Enjoy.

My dad has a 3.0 a4 avant estate so I am guessing pretty much the same car underneath. We went Andora skiing init, 4 up with all our gear. 85mph roughly through France and we got 43mpg. Really good so I’m guessing the a5 would be similar

Really is a timeless design. Remember being in berlin 07 maybe 08 and seeing one for the first time, it just looked SO right and so germanic!

Have always fancied a 3.0 tdi one. Looks good in grey OP

Cheers. It is. Taken from the Glen Docherty viewpoint towards Loch Maree. Great place to stop and take in the view, and it’s quiet which is a bonus.

It has a pan sunroof, memory driver’s seat, B&O sound system, among other things that feature. No Drive Select which would have been nice, but as I have never used it, I don’t miss it.

First car for me with DSG box for me. Had to almost glue my left leg to the centre console for to avoid going for the clutch pedal, and printing my face on the windscreen.

Nice car.

Ignore the VAG-haters on here & there's plenty who recognise that cars that meet their owners' needs and expectations are the best cars to own.

It is like the A4, but there’s no leg room in the back seat behind me in the A5.

I loving the mid range shove you get when you need it, especially in sport. If you go for full throttle, the engine does make a nice roaring noise for a diesel.

MPG wise, I’m averaging 42-44mpg, which I’m more than happy with. On motorway runs, if I drive gently within the speed limit, I’ve seen as much as 52mpg from the DIS but it’s more high 40s. At 70 mph the engine ticks over at 1,600rpm in 7th in D.

The traffic on my commute provided very few opportunities for fun, so I have ended up playing the mpg game trying to drive a smooth as possible. Later finishes from work have had their plus sides. Since lockdown, I’ve been out very occasionally for essentials. More time has been spent washing and waxing it than driving it.

You do actually have drive select, (even without the button on the dashboard) if you activate the hidden menu in the MMI there is a procedure within VCDS which allows you to enable it to be selected from the main Car menu, I did it on my S5.

I'm more of an Alfa fan regarding styling but the A5 is a car I appreciate and looks great.

Colleague has a sportback which makes it very practical but still looks good.

You've done well with hanging on to your cars for the long haul. Has the A6 shown any big problems engine or transmission wise?

How is the A5 meant to compare with the A6 and A4 in terms of refinement?

I never knew that. Thanks for this. How do you get to the hidden menu? Is there a how to anywhere?

this should be applicable for your age of A5

to enable the hidden menu

http://www.audienthusiasts.com/VagComMMI.html

and then for ADS programming

http://www.audienthusiasts.com/VagCom_FL_ADS.html

once you've done the programming further down that page it tells you have to access the hidden menu.

Assuming you have a genuine VCDS cable

Lovely looking car, particularly in that colour. I would love an A5 and if my A3 ever dies, it'll be top of my shopping list.

Soon after getting the A6 in 2014 I discovered water in the rear footwell. I ended up stripping out the carpet to dry it out. Turned out water was draining from the plenum chamber straight into one of the chassis rails and coming up through the floor. So the plenum drain was diverted with some tubing to drain water away from the chassis rail and for good measure the bungs in the chassis rail were removed to allow any water finding its way it to drain out.

The turbo went nearly two years ago so I had that replaced and it’s been fine since.

For refinement, even though the suspension is firmer, the A5 is a lot quieter over bumpy roads than the A6. The driving position is much better in the A5. The SE spec seats in in the A6 does not offer the same support - lack of any lumbar support and a base that won’t tilt doesn’t help.

The A6 being manual has a short 1st gear, so you really need to think twice about pulling out onto busy roundabouts, but you get used to it. It has decent mid range oomph though. The A5 is in a different league for that though.
