Vintage ( Retro? ) Sunpro LED Gauge Pod

Hi Guys,

I’m hoping this is the right place to put this, and hope it’s of some interest too.

I bought this Sunpro LED Gauge pod probably almost 18 years ago, with the intention of fitting it to my 1983 Defender V8.

Anyway things happened and the years slipped by, it’s been SAR in the garage all that time.

So I fished it out at the weekend and it looks like it needs a good place to live, so I thought I would stick it in Big Foot our Current Defender.

Here’s the gauge pod in all it’s glory.

I don’t know why, it’s always reminded me a bit of the Star Trek sick bay monitor!

Of course it could equally be likened to the dash in KITT from Knight Rider too!

And of course in time honoured fashion the instructions are no where to be found.

Still it’s only 5 cables, red and black are obviously power, and I suspect yellow will be illumination too.

That leaves orange and white, and I seem to recall that Orange is normally Oil pressure so that would leave white as water temp.

As I allreasy have a water temp gauge in the std Land Rover dash, I’m thinking that if I can find the right sender unit, then an oil temp readout might be better.

And I’m not happy with these wires, let me sort that now!

First I thought it would be good to give them a twist to make them all stay neatly together.

So used the old trusty wooden ice cream stick method.

Worked OK.

Then decided to really tidy them up properly, so got some lengths of heat shrink tubing out, and my trusty Snap-On heat gun out.

Cable loom all sorted now, much happier with the way this looks!

And it looks good in an old school cool retro way when powered up too!

Now the next question is, shall I change the surface mounted glass tube bulbs used for background illumination with green leds?
