Recommend me a shed!

After a recent unexpected breakdown, I now need to find a new car and have reached somewhat of an impasse.
My commute is 15 miles each way, mainly motorway, five days a week. I have a young child so isofix is a must. Im not overly fussed on space but think having anything supermini size would get annoying after a while. Not fussed on petrol/ diesel but would prefer food economy.
Im looking for something in shed territory (could afford up to about £2,500 but the cheaper the better) but my partner hates the idea! What should I be looking for in this price range that would still give the impression of not being totally knackered?
Shes put off by the thought of buying something cheap that will need to be repaired fairly soon anyway. Any suggestions welcome!

When I moved from a merc lease to a shed 2 years ago, I got this amazing feeling about not having to worry about dents and scratches and then you'd look at other cars on the road that you know are leases and think, how much that person is spending on that car that month.
Those feelings of elation disappear when you get your first warning light and then you spend your time thinking about whether the shed will get you to work that day.
