I'd like to build a website to sell an idea I have.

How much will it cost to get a website up and running from scratch? I intend to make the site myself as it only needs to be fairly simple.

What do I need? Domain, somewhere to host it, etc?

As I intend to make money out of it, do I need to register it as a small business? What legal issues do I need to be aware of? What about tax?

Sorry if some of these seem like stupid questions but I don't have a clue!

Hmmm. If you have no clue whatsoever you're going to find the learning curve pretty steep.

If you're selling something then you'll want a fairly professional-looking site and, with the greatest of respect, a "my first web site" type site just won't cut the mustard.

You will also need a domain name and hosting.

You may need to investigate trademark / copyright / patent issues if it is a particularly good idea.

Can't really advise on business structure. You'd need to talk to an accountant or a business advisor.

Thanks,

Looks like it may be a slightly larger undertaknig than I was first thinking!

Maybe I should just set up an ebay account.

If that suits your business model / idea, then go for it. A good way to dip your toe in the water.

If you are planning to be all legal and above board with regards to tax then you will need to register as a Sole Trader with the tax man and complete a Self Assessment tax return at the end of the year.

Hopefully Eric MC will be a long shortly - he'll be able to advise on tax matters far better than I.

JohnRB flagged this thread for me as I hardly ever look at "Computers and Stuff".

Running a business can be quite complicated and you generally do need the assistance of an accountant to avoid the pitfalls of tax, National Insurance, VAT, PAYE etc.

Why don't you e-mail me if you want a chat about what things you need to be looking out for if you intend to set up your own business.

Maybe a "sister" posting on the "Business" forum might be worthwhile as well.

Indeed. This thread seems to have two aspects - the technical side of setting up a website, which belongs in this forum, and the business side which belongs in the Business forum.

Thanks for the replies.

I think it will be a good idea to try out ebay first to see how much demand there is. If it is high enough I'll think more about building a website.
