Hi,

One of our cars is a 208 GTi. Back roads it's a riot and when on it full pelt, but cruising at motorway speeds the exhaust just makes a droning noise and after a few miles just becomes annoying.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I either change the noise or somehow reduce it. I thought of some form of dynamat equivalent but not sure it will work?

Thanks

Is it still fitted with the standard factory exhaust ?

When I've owned loud motorcars I've found the easiest solution is to turn the radio up.

You might find that a small car like the 208 is always going to be somewhat unrefined no matter how many silencers and sheets of sound deadening you add.

Yep, still factory exhaust.

I have thought about a new exhaust but difficult to try before you buy!

Speak to an exhaust company who could mod you something bespoke. Example here. https://www.infinity-exhausts.co.uk/

From a very simplistic point of view: More silencing volume in the exhaust system, however it's a complicated issue, with a lot of factors that could influence. Depending on the severity, perhaps NVH material on the boot floor or similar but need to know more.

Is it only a very specific RPM it does it as or a more general problem?

I just want the drone to go away at about 70-80. Its not so bad at 60, sadly it just at motorway speeds when not accelerating etc in 6th gear. I don't mind the noise when I'm actually using the engine, but when it's just sat there at about 2.5 to 3k rpm I don't want any real noise from the exhaust! ??

The road noise whilst obviously never going to great is ok, it's the noise mainly from the centre to back under the car.

Have you had the car from new? If not, perhaps someone chopped the middle silencer off?

It's just that I'm surprised an OEM system would drone at these speeds.

Does it seem like part of the exhaust system might be hitting resonance at those engine speeds? If it's practical, try driving in a different gear at those speeds (or just dip the clutch for a few seconds so you can let the revs drop) and see whether this is actually engine rev/load related, or from some other source such as a drive shaft / wheel imbalance.

The later cars don’t even have a centre box.

If I drop the clutch the noise does go. If I drive in 5th it does change and not droning, but not something I probably want to do long term..
