Advice Required - Kit Car incorrectly Registered
Discussion

Hi All,
I've acquired a vehicle and the V5 came back listing it as a Van, when its actually a convertible car.
The conversion was carried out in 1989 and the builder/owner evidently did not register the changes.
I believe there have been 3 owners since with me being the 4th.
So for maybe 30 years this vehicle has been used on the roads with an incorrect V5 ?
Any sensible advice on what do to ?
1) Do I go down the path of correctly registering it which will lead to much cost for the iva/sva/?va Test and any modifications then requred to pass
2) Do I do nothing ?
3) Is there an amnesty approach ?
4) Some other way ?
Cheers
1 - the only real legal way forward as i see it - although you may have dome difficulty and lots of work and some cost.I've acquired a vehicle and the V5 came back listing it as a Van, when its actually a convertible car.

2 - you may get away with it. but if you have an accident or anything insurance may be void and you could be in a whole world of pain
3 - there was an amnesty in the 90's - that ship has long sailed.
4 - no idea, sorry. in this case it's very much a "buyer beware" situation im afraid!
There was a DVLA amnesty back in 98/99 to normalise those vehicles that had been "creatively registered", since then however SVA took over, and now IVA covers everything for a radically altered vehicle.
You only really have 3 options....
1. Pray you don't get caught/hope your insurance doesn't bale out on you if you need it.
2. Plead your case with DVLA, but you will need loads of proof that it has been a convertible since 89 (good luck with that!) and hope that they are being "nice" that particular day.
3. Sell it and hope the buyer doesn't notice...…

Best of luck getting it IVA. This is not a nice test and at £450 may not be cost effective.
Plead to DVLA may possibly work. Has it ever been featured in a kitcar mag, newspaper, online advert etc. all of which could demonstrate it has been that way for a long time. Did it get its MOT at the same station for a period of time again the inspector may be able to offer proof.

Many thanks for the replies …
I think PLEADING is my first approach.
I have paperwork from when it was converted,
it was then sold and used for Weddings
Then sold again and then sold again these bits are patchy.
I also have Pics of the build and later on advertising as a Wedding car.
The Number plate was changed to an older plate, presumably to add age to vehicle.
Previous MOT's I have only go back to Aug 2006, it was converted way before then.
Apart from that I guess the parts from the donar reused seems good on their point system. Chassis, engine, gearbox, etc all reused.
I feel a load of PAIN coming my way ...

There may be another option.
If the entire chassis is as original (unmodified) and the engine, gearbox, diff, drive and everything considered "structural" is as per original van, then you *may* be able to get away with registering it as a body conversion/swap. I'm not up to date with the details, but it's how the MR2 and Fiero Ferrari replicas are registered usually, also the same with the likes of the Sammio too.

Hi
The chassis is not chopped or welded.
There would be a few new holes for the mudguards, etc
Maybe best I try that approach first ...
So its down as
Make: Leyland Daf
Model: 200 Series
Body type Float
Need some advice on what to ask for, I'm guessing for something like below
Make: Leyland Daf
Model: Sherpley or maybe 200 Sherpley ?
Body Type: Convertible
Any ideas all ?
