so a friend has gotten a new number. despite me adding that number to his contact on my phone he appears as a seperate contact on my whatsapp. Meaning I have (let's call him Bob) two bob's.

This is rather annoying as its essentially making the old 'bob' thread dead. Does anyone know if there's a way to merge them so that conversations with old Bob and new Bob can remain on 1 thread? (along with all media links etc..)

On the old message thread did it not just say ‘Bob has changed his number to xxx’?

I guess he has got a new phone and new SIM at the same time and not linked his account.

WhatsApp is actually username based, rather than MSISDN based, it’s just that your username is usually the MSISDN of the SIM in the handset.

He didn't select the option to change number in the WhatsApp app on his phone. If he got a new phone as well as new number he should have put the new SIM in his old phone and changed his number in WhatsApp. Then ensured WhatsApp had made a backup, and switched over to the new phone and allowed WhatsApp to reinstate itself from the backup.

Nothing you can do. He's set himself up as a new user, so a new user he will be. Maybe he chose to do that!
I do occasionally, well every couple of years. Yesterday's news is yesterday's news after all...
