In this vid, what is the "effect" he does at 17 seconds and 44 seconds called, and how does he do it? It seems like a good way to split up sections in a video without being too distracting.

Thanks!

It's just a cut, either in a long piece of footage or from one clip with very similar content to another. No special effect.

This.

Personally OP I find it more distracting than the other alternatives:

1) Re-video the clip and do it properly
2) Apply a transition

(For that clip, (1) would probably be best).

^^ Yeah, it's very lazy IMO but seems to be the trend at the moment.

You could very tenuously describe it as a jump cut if you were being charitable...

"Jump Cut - Offers a fast and entertaining way to keep your audience hooked. Take a long clip and cut it up, letting characters jump around in time. Cuts out the boring parts to keep people entertained."

Thanks chaps.

The problem is that I have a lot of "timeless" content to produce (i.e. it will be uploaded and stay there for the foreseable future) and not a lot of time to produce it, and each video is quite long. I don't want to get to 10 minutes in, and then have to start again... and again.. and again...

Maybe a proper transition is a good idea. Thanks for the tip!

Or do it properly and get a second camera (or use the same camera to record it again from a different angle) so you can cut between them and lose the mistakes properly.
