After about 7 years of not having a dog we have a Basset Hound puppy coming to our household sometime in July. I just wondered what the latest thinking on dog food is? Is there any commercial dog food that’s any good or is it still fairly rubbish?

Any recommendations?

Miniature Dachshund here. Fed all raw, mainly from Bella & Duke.

Skinners field and trial is well regarded around here amongst farmers and gamekeepers. Our 3 year old Saluki cross loves it and it's pretty good value.

From memory it's about £20 for a 15kg bag, no vat on it either because of the "commercial" branding.

We feed it along with occasional raw bones, meat and scraps of whatever we're eating/cooking.

We put our terriers on Butternut around 18 months ago - I was highly sceptical (mainly on cost grounds) but they are absolutely thriving on it and the 13 year old has a new lease of life.

Both dogs have lost weight (in a good way), really enjoy their food and have become 'neutral' smell wise and the Welshie has lost his one time greasy coat. Previously they were on all types of dried kibble type food, latterly Harringtons which they hated along with most other dried food.

It really has been a revelation based upon our experience with it.

countless dogs....always Royal Canin, see the difference between our dogs and the litter mates fed on all sorts of different types, but one diet will not suit all, avoid evangelical food theorists, find what works for your pet and don't feel you have to pick one source.

I agree - Skinners field and trial, salmon and rice was the favourite for the Black Labs I looked after. Their coats always looked wonderfully shiny.
Also additions were raw carrots and brocolli as treats.

My little thing, Tinker, eats what we eat but we eat healthy food. Last evening she had a pork chop with veg. No gravy.

Raw meat and bones is the best for them in the main.

If you're looking at dried food check the meat content. Cheaper brands have a lot of cereals.

At first mines seemed to prefer old horse manure more than anything I attempted to pass his lips. Thank god he grew out of that stage to wanting my Sunday roast instead.

Tried every fancy dog food known to man and will only eat winalot. Probably crap but hes so stubborn he would rather starve to death.

Another vote for Millies, but we add a small amount of their canned wet food into the kibble for a bit more interest.

Been backwards and forwards with our mutt, 3ventuallu settled in a mix of Harrington's salmon and potato and Tesco tinned.

I think he'd eat anything, but this seems to keep him regular and consistent.

Doesn't help the farts though

1. Try Fish4Dogs. It stinks, but mine will eat around roast chicken to get to it!

2. Try the allaboutdogfood website for some good unbiased reviews. It's eye-opening.

3. I really wanted to feed raw dog food but my Vet, who I respect, has warned me off it as dangerous.

What was his reasoning for it being dangerous?

Shares in a dry food company probably.

Isn't this like asking what oil do you use?

FWIW we feed Raw whole chickens that have been minced and frozen. We add a tablespoon worth of Salmon oil to it, the dogs love it and look great.

The vets always compliment us on their condition then frown when we tell them they're raw fed. Not met a vet yet that advocates it but the only study I could find was on cats and highlighted a Taurine deficiency leading to heart problems. The salmon oil takes care of that though.

We use 'Duck' raw meat and bone for our GSD.

Recommended by the trainer and Bear loves it.
