We cant take China on. But we could offer a safe home to the people of Hong Kong. Thoughts?

We should. But we betrayed them last time. We probably will again.

We should never have let it go. But since we did we should definitely allow HK people in.

Was it a betrayal? I thought there wasn't a choice about handing it back. 99 year lease ran out.

I agree with the others - we should be offering them sanctuary.

I've seen the idea floated of building a new free-city in the image of Hong Kong and essentially importing the wealth and industry of Hong Kong to the UK. I quite like the concept, though I've no idea if it's a good idea all round.

And the British passport holders in Hong Kong at the time?

How about making the Isle of Wight a freeport and inviting them to recreate HK there.

They seem to like islands with porous borders and two-level governments, so we could relocate them all to Northern Ireland...there's plenty of space there (currently about 1/3rd the density of England).

Although they may feel a little spread out being 50 times less dense than in Hong Kong.

We can then give it back to Ireland in 99 years wink

N.I. might work too, but I particularly like the idea of creating a Singapore/Hong Kong on the channel. That would really ps off the eurocrats.

For those unfamiliar with the plan

My own view is to combine pragmatism with humanitarianism. On the whole these are educated, hard working, people from a first world economy. They will likely prove a benefit rather than a burden so the offer should be made.

Inviting a bunch of foreigners with a seperate culture to move to a corner of Ireland worked so well last time! biggrin

I have no problems with lowering the bar to allow more HK immigration. We can't recreate HK in Britain, but if we're serious about this brave new world we'll be entering post-Brexit it could be a lot of help.

Dunno about that. The Chinese who set up Chinatowns in places like Liverpool integrated just fine.

Absolutely. Having worked over there, in general they are highly educated (many actually educated here), motivated, entrepreneurial and would be a huge asset to our country. This is the kind of thing we should embrace and would make, I suggest a tangible difference to our wealth and our society in general

What a message it would send to the world too.

Interesting assumption that we just click our fingers and the people of Hong Kong come running.

I agree. My wife misses the ladies market. I miss Little Sheep and Monster Suchi.

Actually they would be running away from something, nothing to do with us 'clicking' our fingers.

I’m no expert on this and I’m going from memory but there is an argument that the lease was not with the PRC so there was no need to honour it.

I have no idea how accurate that is.

I dunno, Cowesloon sounds fine on paper, but they have a few of those already.
