I really couldn't give a toss about frame rates as long as it can manage 60. I'm old anyway. I have a 144hz laptop and can tell it's smoother but that's about it and wouldn't really miss it if it was gone.
I'm a 4K girl and wouldn't want to go back to lower resolutions so that's the main thing for me.
I have a 28" Asus 4K thing. It's TN but I can live with it for normal use. For gaming it's fine.

got to be the resolution that the biggest wow factor for me now. I do lots of games so recently went for a 2560x1440 fitted my price bracket and fast refresh and Hz. Its really good.

At the moment I'm using a 2560x1440 60Hz (overclocked to 75Hz) 31.5 inch Acer monitor. Been happy with it but have found myself looking at 4k monitors that are a bit bigger. At some point I will upgrade but then that will lead to a desire to upgrade my GPU (1080Ti) so would have to factor in an upgraded graphics card into the price as well.
As a counterpoint, for me it's all about outright size and colour depth, since 95% of my gaming is all single-player and I prefer to sit in an armchair I've gone for a 55" OLED TV with decent response times and lots of HDR compatibility. As long as it does at least 60FPS (it does) I'm happy with that. Appreciate if you're sat at a desk rather than a few feet away then you don't need to go as big, but outside of a VR headset it's filling your vision with as much screen as possible that makes the biggest difference for me.
I have a 27" 1440p (can't remember what the refresh rate is), and I think 1080p would look a bit crap on that size. As with someone's early comment, my 1080 runs everything happily at 1440, whereas I think it would start to struggle with 4k, so he cost of what's driving it really needs to be included in your choice.

Yep, 4K TV here too. It's only 60Hz but it's a challenge enough getting games running at 4K/60 with all the bells and whistles on as it is.HDR is great too.

You are not the first [person to say that 1080p just doesn't cut it anymore and i quite surprised to hear it!This picture is taken with my phone and then reduced to one quarter of its quality to send as an attachment (from 2.5mb to .75mb) and it still looks pretty good to me although it looks way better on my 28" monitor!

Are you looking at it at 1080 on your PC screen? This picture is taken with my phone and then reduced to one quarter of its quality to send as an attachment (from 2.5mb to .75mb) and it still looks pretty good to me although it looks way better on my 28" monitor!
That image appears to be 720x540, and if I zoom so it fills my 27" monitor it looks pretty bad from 2.5 feet away. The stickers are unreadable and the pixilation is really noticeable around the windscreen. If I zoom it to 1/4 of my screen, so about 1080 equivalent, it doesn't look as bad, but it looks a lot better if I leave it actual size covering about 1/10 of my screen.
I'm not saying 1080 doesn't cut it any more, I'm saying it depends on the screen size, the 14" display on my laptop looks fine at 1600x900 viewed from about 2' away, but the 1280x800 in my Rift gives a noticeably poorer image quality when viewed from about an inch away.

1080p is ok. and I felt the same as you but when I swapped over to 2560x1440 it really is a massive jump up in quality. I also upgraded my pc to match but I was sceptical as well but a convert for sure now. This picture is taken with my phone and then reduced to one quarter of its quality to send as an attachment (from 2.5mb to .75mb) and it still looks pretty good to me although it looks way better on my 28" monitor!

Yeah, obviously the picture itself is way lower resolution than 1080. I guess i should be happy that 1080 is good enough for me That image appears to be 720x540, and if I zoom so it fills my 27" monitor it looks pretty bad from 2.5 feet away. I can run 4k but then i get the occasional slow down which is far more annoying to me than playing in 1080.I sometimes run GTA5 on my projector at about 90" and 1080p and that still look fine to me!

I find the difference between 1080p and 4K video pretty subtle and would happily watch either. It's less so for games for me maybe because the entire thing is created from scratch rather than filmed. I have a 1080ti and it's never had any trouble pushing anything, but I don't go above 60hz. It's been ages since I've bought a brand new game so it might be quite some time before it needs an upgrade.
It's all about immersion for me, so:
(1) Physical size. It has to fill as much of my field of view as possible. Currently using a 34" Ultrawide which is great for width but could do with a bit more height to be honest. I really really like having to move my head to see the edge of the screen.
(2) Realism & detail in graphics. Polygon count, hi-res textures, bump mapping, ray tracing, love it all. If I can see the pores in people's faces and raindrops on leaves then so much the better
(3) Pixel density. Don't wanna be seeing no jaggies, fool. By the same coin, anti-aliasing. My monitor is a middling 110dpi at native 3440x1440 which is just about OK.
(4) Refresh rate. Has to be smooth but that only means 60fps, without compromising too much on (2) and (3). 240Hz is just willy-waving for pubescent pro-gamer wannabes.

Had my 3440x1440 34" LG Ultrawide for a year or so now - love it! Technically its limited to 60hz, but as it (and my AMD card) do Freesync, it somehow manages 75hz.
As my card is getting on a bit, it only hits ~60-75fps on medium/high settings anyway, so that's fine.
Its only when the FPS drops to ~30fps that it hurts my eyes.

I've got 1 24 inch 1080P 144hz that I game on. Decent Pixel density, and the high refresh rate is nice. My other display is a regular 60hz.
Something like GTA V which I normally play is well into 3 digits, and often at 144FPS with a Ryzen 7 and RTX 2060.
I'm sure 4k would make a difference, but trading frame rate for pixels isn't for me really. Not to mention due to the work I do I really need to have my display set at 100% scaling, so would make for difficult reading of regular text, too.
