New phone - Moto G8 Plus or Nokia 7.2?
Discussion
Afternoon all,
I'm in need of a new smartphone as my 3 year old Xperia X compact has a dying battery and a dodgy sim slot.
I''m not after anything particularly cutting edge/top end as the Xperia did as much as I needed to in terms of power, photography etc. , though the battery life had always been a bit rubbish.
My only real criteria were: must be a known b reputable brand not a weird Chinese popup name, must have an internal memory card slot rather than purely on board storage, and must be USB-C connection as I have a lot of other USB-C stuff and associated infrastructure.
It would be nice to find something reasonably sized too, such as my current 4.6" phone, as I'm not a fan of the massive Phablets mostly on offer now.
I have a few large vouchers for use at either Argos/PC world so had looked on their sites to find something new in the £2-300 range, and I seem to have narrowed it down to either a Nokia 7.2 or a Motorola G8 Plus.
Unfortunately both are 6" but I'm sure I can get used to the extra size in terms of things i'll be able to reach one-handed on the screen.
Both phones seem to get "ok" reviews online, which i'm not overly fussed about as I'm not after a top end fully loaded example, and I'm sure they're significantly better than my Xperia.
I'm seemingly set on the Moto at the minute, as it seems to have a better battery capacity, faster charging, and a mild water resistance vs none.
Only advantage of the nokia seems to be futureproof ability to run android 10? As my phones tend to live in a hard case and get used in workshop environments with dropping potential, the design of the camera on the Nokia also seems to be to be more vulnerable to damage due to requiring a massive cutout for it, rather than the smaller slit the motor requires in the back of the case.
So, before I drop £280 on either of them, can anyone think of something I've missed/a better alternative/ any other compelling arguments either way?
Thanks,
Matt

A much better option - Pixel 3a. Not sure if Argos stock them, but they are the same price as the ones you've listed and are faster, better support, better camera and probably battery life.
Edit - just read that you need an external SD card slot. Ignore the 3a then!
Just between the two phones you have listed, I would go for the Moto. I have had many in the past and have never had a bad experience with them. They aren't the best at updating software anymore, but it should still have Android 10. However, you can't really go wrong with either for general usage.

I've always been pretty impressed by the 'bang for your buck' you get with the Moto G range (though I've never owned an expensive top end phone for comparison).
My Moto G7 received the Android 10 update yesterday, so if that's one of your criteria, then I would assume the G8 would be fairly future proof Android update wise.

The spec of the G8 Plus is superior to the Nokia 7.2.
Faster processor, bigger battery etc...
It is also £239.99 at Argos online. If you absolutely have to have an SD card slot, that is a good option from the mainstream firms.
I still think the Pixel 3a is a much better phone, but no SD card slot is a shame for you.

Hi
I am going to be no help at all. My wife has recently changed her phone from a Nokia 7.1. She looked at the phones you suggested, but eventually opted for an Oppo Reno Z. It was £190 on Amazon a couple of weeks ago.
It does not have an SD card slot but comes with 128gb of memory. It has a large battery which she likes/ needs. The cameras are fine and vibrant. The OLED screen is a step up from the Nokia. Some people bemoan the OS but she honestly is not bothered ( and that is saying something!!
