Trading up from Tudor to Rolex - advice please
Discussion
Hi guys,
Long time lurker in this forum section!
I am considering selling my Tudor Blackbay and buying a Rolex Datejust.
I am already on the books at a Rolex dealer for a new Submariner but really like the idea of a smaller watch for daily duties.
I have received one valuation for the Tudor - Watchfinder have valued it at £1200-£1300 (I bought in December 2017 for (I think) £2650 from Goldsmiths. I have box and papers etc. Watch is in great condition.
My question is, how else would you recommend I dispose of the Tudor, with the purpose of achieving a better sale price? I’m hesitant about selling on eBay & posting the watch to the highest bidder through fear of somehow being scammed in the process.
Pictures for reference:

I have really enjoyed my time of ownership with the Tudor, it was my first ‘proper’ watch - but time to move on to Rolex, which was always my ambition.
Many thanks,
Daniel

I sold exactly the same watch as you own via Ebay. The ETA/ smiley dial fetches a higher premium than the later Tudors. I sold mines for 2200.00.
Watchfinder are pretty ruthless with their valuations. CHRONO24 is a great site for selling aswell.
Good luck with your conquest. You'll find the Rolex epic in every way.

Thank you everyone for your replies.
Edinburgh have come back to me already with a rough estimate of £1650, so we’re moving in the right direction!

Try an independent reseller perhaps?
Dominic Hackett at Hackett Watches
Or Jonathan at Edinburgh Watch Company are two that spring to mind.
I have fired off an email to Hackett Watches and Edinburgh Watch Company following your recommendation...Dominic Hackett at Hackett Watches

Also, why the Sub, when you have a lovely Black Bay ?
It’s a good question, I’ve started to doubt whether I would actually go through with the purchase should I get the call saying they have one in for me. Partly because I’ve ‘been there and done that’ with the Black Bay (sort of), and partly because I quite like the idea of a vintage Rolex of a more subtle style. blueg33 said:
Black bay is nicer than the Datejust IMO.
From watching BB prices for the last couple of years, I reckon the ETA movement typically sells for less than the in house chronometer.
It’s a matter of opinion I suppose, they’re two completely different watches! Have you got a BB?From watching BB prices for the last couple of years, I reckon the ETA movement typically sells for less than the in house chronometer.

I really wanted one when they came out, waited a year or so and bought a Pelagos as I preferred the feel and wanted to try titanium. That is now sold and I am saving for a GS Snowflake I would use a watch forum, try rolexforums, just do a lot of due diligence on the purchaser. I have purchased several pieces and never had an issue.
The alternative is to use someone like Dom (who I hear is very good) but he will obviously need to make a margin as he is a business but you will get peace of mind.
Good luck and hope you get what you're after.

Never sell to watchfinder, total vultures.
Speak to Edinburgh Watch Company and see what he can do for you. If I recall he has a few datejusts in stock.

I am trading in my IWC Portugieser Chrono to Watchfinder for a Vacheron. Was pleasantly surprised by their offer, but I did get it originally for a good price and no doubt they will sell put it up for a hell of a mark up.Speak to Edinburgh Watch Company and see what he can do for you. Maybe it's because I am part exchanging?
Try Blowers. They gave me the best price for a Breitling recently. Better than Dom H, and certainly better than Watchfinder.
I have sold on Ebay without issue. I did the following:
I did a comprehensive video of the watch showing complete set, condition, everything working, crown action, any marks and finished it by showing time and date on the Sky planner on the TV, daft, but I didn't want to get scammed. I showed myself packing it, and sealing it. I sent it insured Special. I told the buyer what I was doing too, in case he was a scammer and he might then pull out.
All went smoothly. I had to pay the fees though.
Chrono24 is a good place to sell too.
Oh, and don't forget to put it on PH too in the classifieds.
