Mazda 6 Estate with 100k miles. Any gotchas?

Hi all,

I'm zoned into buying a Madza 6 estate Diesel but with my budget of 3000 quid I can only afford cars as new as 2013 with close to or over 100k miles on the clock.

When I start enquiring is there anything specific I should be looking out for (apart from the standard buy a used car stuff)?

I've found one '09 Mazda6 Estate TD SL listed close by for 1295 quid but it has 145k miles. It looks in good condition, so if nothing is majorly wrong in the test drive then it's a steal, right?

I plan to use the car for day trips (instead of the train) and perhaps a road trip to Italy once the borders open up.

I have a 2.5 Petrol 2008 Hatch.
Other than a Thermostat and Brake Calipers Sliders/Carriers it has been pretty good.

The 2.2 Diesel can have Chain Stretch and the Oil Strainer prone to blocking up.
That said, for £1300 it may be worth a punt and it has got to 145K

Presume it is the Blue one in Chatham on AT?

Yeah, that the one. It's made it to 145k, what's to say it can't do another 145!

DPF and cam chains are the big ones on these, lower suspensions arms are expensive too. You want to see a full history with the correct oil being used.

A colleague had this steering fault with his car, which is pretty expensive to fix, so when you test drive it make sure there is no pulling from the steering.

I bought a 2009 2.5l petrol a year or so ago with 100k on the clock. I would have gone for the diesel but was put off by the timing chain issue. The petrol is great, not exactly bursting with power but really smooth, not too bad on fuel (35 ish mpg with quite a bit of m way driving) and really reliable. The car in general is fantastic, great spec, comfortable, plenty of space and not at all bad to drive.

Avoid like the plague. I had a 2009 2.2 diesel Mazda 6 for new and in the 2 years I had it, it spent 4 months in the garage.


1. Timing Chain stretch at about 18,000 miles (parts delayed as Mazda prioritise supply of parts to keep churning out new cars - leaving the poor suckers who have already bought one of their cars to wait 8 weeks). Apparently the delay was perfectly reasonable because they had provided a 3 year old Vauxhall Corsa loan car.

2. Dual Mass Flywheel failed at 22,000 miles. Despite the clutch friction surface being 'like new' they tried to blame it on "driver abuse".

3. Random intermittent electronic gremlins - wipers failed on the M6 Toll in heavy rain (nice!), alarm kept going off. No-one of which were ever resolved.

4. Took several attempts to start after sitting outside overnight in low temperature in winter - dealer could not replicate fault but when I pointed out that might be because they only ever got to test it after I'd driven it to the dealership and the engine was warm, they just shrugged. On the one occasion they agreed to keep the car overnight, they left it in their nice warm workshop. Surprise surprise it started fine the following morning.

5. Timing chain stretched again at 30,000 miles - repeat of the first experience and was the final straw.


I've never been so happy to dump a ste car and walk away from the ste brand.

The early 2.2d Mazda engine have a number of issues with your budget & a need for reliability I'd be looking at these:

Laguna2 Dynamique the engine is well proven & they're as reliable as anything else in your price range:

Agreed. The fact that a Renault, a Vauxhall, an Alfa and a Citroen are all seen as being more reliable than a Japanese Mazda is a pretty sad indication of the level of garbage that Mazda have churned out.

I’ve had issues 2, 3 and 4. Scrappage scheme of 2018 got rid of it
