Two cars, up to £200k

I’ve got three cars at the moment, an Abarth 595, Mercedes SL63, and Audi R8 plus, none of which is a family car.

I’ve been looking for a family car, going round and round between...

Stelvio Quadrifoglio
E63 AMG
VW Arteon
Bentley Mulsanne Speed
RS 7, and so on.

To replace the Fiat, but I was planning on keeping the Mercedes and the Audi as I liked the idea of having both a proper high-performance car in the Audi and and a nice open-topped GT in the Mercedes.

I realised tonight that I’ve maybe been looking at this wrong, and could replace them all with two cars to cover every need for a similar overall budget for example a 2014 E63 for about £30,000, and a Ferrari Portofino to be relatively sporty for £160,000.

Which other pair of cars would do the job? The family car needs to be nice to drive, to have four doors and a big boot, and be comfortable for very long journeys (Mulsanne speed, BMW M760 Li...) with the other one being a convertible that I could happily drive down the autoroutes to Nice but also hammer back across the alps while enjoying a high-revving engine and delicate handling.

Is there a good choice for a total budget of under £200,000?

You could take £50k+ off the cost if you chose something a few months older.

Facelift Range Rover 4.4 Autobiography for £65-75k and £100k+ for your sporty one, plenty of choice but you already know that. RR's are such great everyday cars and so versatile but you may not be a 4 x 4 fan.

Porsche Macan Turbo at around £50k ticks the family box, then a McLaren 570S Spider for around £110k.

I would. I just sensed that the OP needs something with a degree of comfort (hence mentioning the Portofino) and I think a 570S would handle very long drives better than a 675LT.

It's a great car but it's not very big in the back given the other cars on the OP's possible list included a Bentley Mulsane Speed and a 760iL. Also, for this brief the family car doesn't need to lap the 'Ring so a soft rocket powered sofa would be the order of the day...

Something like this perhaps (I wouldn't, I'd stick to my Range Rover suggestion at the top but it's food for thought...)

Does a Ferrari FF fill the family car role? Then I'd probably have an Audi R8 V10 spyder as the fun car Maybe keep the Abarth as the town car though!

I’m coming round to the choice of an SUV. I do need a big boot (two young children, and likely to be driving for holidays for a while) but maybe want the family car to be at the sportier end, so was thinking if a cayenne or an Alfa Stelvio Quadrifoglio.

For those suggesting a 911, it doesn’t quite hit the spot for me. I want the sporty car to be in the same ballpark as the R8 for handling, and just don’t get the same feeling from a 911.

I’m a long way from old, but after a seven hour journey home from Amsterdam in the R8 I decided that my body would prefer something different, which is why I bought the SL.

I love the S8, and it’s definitely high on the list.

I do need to keep reminding myself, as you point out, that the family car is not for track use, or traffic light drag racing, but I do want a little bit of a “sporting” character, so the S8, S7, S6 or RS6 do appeal.

I have to be able to get two child seats comfortably in the back, and all the bits and pieces needed for family holidays in the boot or a roof box, although I’d be happier if it all goes in the boot.

We also have the wife’s Smart for town, and I have a motorbike and a scooter taking up space too, so brilliant as the Fiat is, I think it’s time for it to go.

If the FF was four doors then I think I’d buy one, but it’s just a bit too cramped and dark back there, and too hard to get the children in and out of.

À Cayenne GTS is possibly good enough for the family car, which would leave plenty for the sports car, but is there actually anything with the refined distance covering of the SL but the precision of the Audi? Mine’s got the carbon brakes, so does drive very nicely. I wonder if I moved away from a Plus model to a standard V10 convertible if it’d be as nice for covering distances as my old V8 R8 was.

I have this combination, although many years and miles older (and much, much cheaper). Simply stunning combination!
