Signs of Dyslexia??
Discussion
Hi,
I'm not sure if I'm worrying about nothing - I'm concerned with my daughter's reading and writing ability. She's 8 (primary 4 next school year) but is behind her 6 year old brother in terms of proficiency - I'd say to a signficant degree.
She panics when faced with a page of text, she can't seem to string sounds together to at least attempt a word she's not seen before, struggles to sit and write a sentence without assistance, gets frustrated with reading and writing easily.
She doesn't struggle with sums / arithmetic in the same way.
I know all kids develop at a different pace, but I'm beginning to think that there's something holding her back a bit - which made me think she's possibly just not able to process words and writing like her brother and maybe suffering from some form of dyslexia.
Question is - is there any way to narrow this down or determine if there's something going on here?

I got diagnosed when I was 26 (maybe 27). Always struggled with reading and writing. Saying some words as well is a problem (I also have dyspraxia which affects speak as well).
If im reading on white paper the text is moving all over the place, that's the biggest problem I've found for me.
Hopefully teachers are a bit better at picking up on these things now...i was just told I was lazy and thick!

There is a lot of support out there now as well which is good!

Quite possibly based on your description. Dyslexia ihas quite the contiuum of symptoms.
The quickest thing is to go private with an Ed Psych. and get a test done. It's not expensive to do. You could be waiting ages on NHS.
The biggest advantage of being tested is understanding your specific cognitive deficits, and the strategies you can employ to mitigate them.
As a parent... Don't worry... Lots of very successful members of the DNA.... Nation Dyslexics Association.
